Breaking in a 6mmBR and Sightron the real world way.

OK. Memorial Day, the first time after six weeks of lousy weekend weather, I finally got to shoot my new Savage 6mmBR build with an 8-32x56 Sightron atop. I was off work and I just had to go, waited long enough.

Conditions were ideal -- for Vietnam during the monsoon season -- and idyllic for any day with a new rifle in your hands. 80-85 degrees, 80-85 percent humidity, 80-85 percent chance of thunderstorms. Ahh, you gotta love south Louisiana.

I should have turned around and went home to Baton Rouge with the first deluge but I was half way there on my 52-mile trip to Sherburne WMA on the banks of the Atchafalaya River.

,Unfortunately, the weather kept the chrono gear in the weatherproof case for the entire shoot. But not a single sign of high pressure all day -- ballistics-wise or weather-wise.)

Got all setup, then a downpour delay, thought the river was going to crest. Finally, stopped, steam coming up off the grass. Then my first observation: holy shit, the view from the backside of my Sightron was frickin' awesome. Everything I'd hoped. So I bore down at 50 yards to set the scope and get the feel for the first shots from the 6mmBR. Initial shot from my 28-inch McGowen 1:8 twist -- nice, recoil equal to my .223s and not as loud. Adjusted scope way up, second shot came up nicely. Third shot, half inch high, and two clicks left. Fourth shot, bull's eye. Smiles.,By the way, 32x at 50 yards is cheating.)

I was using 80gr Bergers over Varget staggered from 29.0 to 31.5,in the end, it didn't make much difference). Drizzling again, so I figure I would clean the bore. Crap, in excitement forgot to bring long cleaning rod. Oh, well, I'll use the bore snake. Crap, in excitement forgot to bring a .243 snake. Had a .223 snake, good enough. Pulled it through. Sun came back out, mirage was shimmering from 50 yards out.

Screw it, I didn't come all this way to worry about breaking in a barrel that a lot said didn't need it anyway. Moved target back to 100 yards. A few more 80 Bergers were shooting near .500 groups. Good enough, not discouraged. Barrel was staying warm, not hot. Went to a batch of 75gr V-Max over Varget 29.0 to 32.0gr loads. The 30.5 grains grouped at a little less than .300 but off bull's eyes. Very pleased. Getting windy though. Another downpour, but a short one.

Sun came back out at about 4 p.m. and steamed up everything like a pot of boiled crawfish. Rain dripping from the range's cover canopy, sweat dripping from my cheek onto the bench. Barrel warming up a bit after some 30 shots total in an hour. Pulled out ten 87 V-Max, again over Varget. Groups opened up some no matter the load. Mostly 1.0 to 1.5 inches. Damnit. Barrel almost too hot to hold -- called it a day. Just in time, slow, steady rain for a half hour.

That was 40 rounds in about 90 minutes with only one pull of an undersized boresnake. I do not shoot competitively -- I did that in Vietnam and won -- and I'll probably always shoot under 300.

I did learn that my barrel likes any kind of bullets over Varget from 29.0 to 32.0 -- especially that 75 V-max at 30.5. Won't really know until I can chrono it. Will probably be my go to round at 100.

Spent what time I had left shooting my sweet CZ .223. But I didn't fare much better with it, either, even with pet loads, under those conditions.

In the Nam, the rain didn't matter much shootin' bursts on full auto. I guess the rain does have an effect on your maiden trip with a new 6mmBR. Didn't do as well as a I expected, but then I won't pass final judgment during a day of rain ... of Biblical proportions at that.

,BTW, both barrels are now soaking in Wipe-Out...kind of like my day.)

Yuck, just ran some dry patches through my bores after an hour in Wipe-Out,with Activator). Out of the new 6mmBR I got mostly black and gray -- powder fouling.

Out of the older .223 I got mostly all blue -- copper fouling.

Will leave some more Wipe-Out overnight and see what comes out.

I also took my Savage with a 28' 1:8 McGowan to the range for the first time this weekend, too. My barrel 'break in' experience was identical to yours - nonexistent. Even after an overnight soak with Wipeout, there was no blue on the patch, just a lot of soot. I loaded 75 and 87 vmax and 105 amax over various charges of Varget. my largest group was .65 and the smallest was .30. Almost all groups were .45 or less. The best load was 30.5 of Varget and the 87 vmax. All loads were .030 off the lands.

Damn, catfish, we sure were in synch. And a day of soaking in Wipe-Out only produced shades of black and gray on the first patch, no blue, copper) at all, and subsequent patches were more brownish-black streaks than anything.

I think my groups would have been a tad better if the heavy rain wouldn't have been so intrusive. Not only must it affect ballistics, but it screws with you mentally and gets frustrating.

My 75 V-Max were outstanding at 30.2gr Varget, considering everything, but I didn't have as good of luck with the 87s. I'll try some more on a dry day. Today I got in some 90gr Bergers. Will use just about the same formula.

Where were you shooting?

Forgot to mention, I was loading at the lands and -0.020. Off-the-lands loads, jumped) shot a good bit better with all three bullets I used,80 Berger, 75 VMax and 87 VMax).

GentleBen,
I hope the 90gr bergers shoot as well in your br as they do in mine. They average about .4 to .6 at 200yds. Thats with cci-450 primers & jammed about 5th. 30.6gr varget. Hope you post your results of your 90gr bergers.

Ok. Will try your load and let you know next week. I've also requested some load data from Walt at Berger's, he usually gives great advice.

Hope I will get better conditions so I can use my chrono. The Berger 90s and 68s will be my focus at next shoot. Any experience with the 68s.

I never was a light bullet shooter until I loaded up some 40gr .223 and shot a 5-shot, one ragged hole group. Now I'm looking for similar results with my 6mmBR. :-)

GentleBen,
I've never used the 68gr in my br due to the fast twist 1/8. I never went below 75gr. I'm working up a load using hornady v-max for ground hogs. I just loaded some 90gr bergers using 30.9gr varget to see if the grp will improve any. Good luck with your 90's.

Hey GentleBen,

I live in Central and wondered if you ever thought of joining the Palo Alto Rifle and Pistol club located in Donaldsonville? I used to shoot at Sherburne, but I hated driving down that 2 miles of gravel road.lol

We have a 100 yd. range and a 600yd prone range. We also have benches set up at 200,300,400 and 500 yds. I used to shoot with a lot of the guys on the 600 yd range with my Dtech 6BR AR. It was fun. I will probably start back later this summer, if I make time to do it.lol

I was on Okinawa for 6 months in 1966, what year was you there?

Glad to know I have someone nearby on this board. Yes, I have been toying with the idea of heading out to Palo Alto and will probably do so in the next month. Have been wanting to test my skills, what they still are) beyond 100 and 200 -- 300 would probably be my limit.

I was stationed with the Corps at Camp Schwab for about 3-4 months in the fall of 1969 after Nixon pulled us out of that hellhole in Nam.

Amazing, you can Google Earth Camp Schwab, and Kadena, etc) now and see a lot of familiar buildings and sites because it is on satellite photo.,You can also do that with Palo Alto and Sherburne.)

Ben,

Let me know if you want to try out the longer distance and if I am available we can go out to the range. 600 yds is real easy with the 6BR. It must be if I can do it.LOL Except on real windy days.
