Breaking down Hornady's ELD Match ammo for 6mm Creedmoor

I am getting great accuracy results at 2880 fps SD 8-9 with my 6 Creed using Peterson SRP brass, Berger 105 bullets, 38.0 gr Hodgdon H4350, and CCI 450 primers. I will keep the RL16 in mind in case I want to dial up the velocity.

X-caliber 8 twist, that's funny because your velocity of 2880 is exactly the same for my 6BR using Norma 203B at 30.4gr and the Berger 105's

I got my barrel today to build my 6mm Creedmoor and I already have supplies to reload so to get started and save time I bought a box of Hornady's match ammo to open one up. The specs are 108gr ELD match bullets loaded at 2.790 COAL, the powder is a little trickier... they have exactly 40.3 grains of ??? Their data on the box list a muzzle velocity of 2960fps and their closest load data using 40.3 grains of powder is 4831SC. I have some 4831SC and they don't appear to have the same color but the kernel size is right. Anybody know whats in there??

Manufacturers get special blends of powder not available to the general public.

Hornady black. I used them in my ruger preditor to break in the barrel before testing hand loads. First shot out of rifle, then adjusted scope. Next 3 shots was in 1 ragged hole.

First 10 rounds down the tube with my Havak PH2 in 6 Creedmoor.


I shot round #1 at 25 yards to get on paper and the next 9 rounds at 100 yatds.


This target was shot with factory loaded Hornady Precision Match 108 ELD-M ammo. Velocity averaged 2868 fps.


All I can say is WOW!


I also shot Berger factory 105 grain Hybrid ammo that averaged 1 MOA and Barnes Vor-TX LR 95 grainers that were rockets at 3232 fps but only did 1.5 MOA.

The factory Hornady Match 108g ELDMs shoot 1/2 MOA for 5 shots out of my 6 Creed w/27" BRUX @ 3025fps. I'll take that anyday for factory ammo.

I need educating. How does it help to have a wider accuracy node? Do you mean you can tolerate more variation in your charge weights?

Yes, that and / or more tolerant of seating depth

An example might be this:
a .308 using a 175 grn bullet
Can use either IMR-4895 or W-760
With the 4895, a nice accurate load may be developed but one more grain of powder may make it spike in pressure = less tolerant of variances in charge weight
Where W-760 may take 3 grains more powder before it starts to spike
= More tolerant
Not only more tolerant of pressure spiking but more tolerant of spiking due to heat, sitting in the chamber , in the sun, etc.

for the homeloader, they may like to use 4895 better
But for the large quantity Mfgr, it may make more sense to use W-760 if there may be variances in charge weight which would not change pressure or velocity much if at all

My guess is that Hornady contracts for tons of powder pounds each year for numerous specific uses and pulling a round apart to perform some type of identity analysis would be entirely speculative and fruitless. The powder might have come from any one of numerous sources and possibly might be unique or one of a kind, like specially designed for a specific cartridge.

When the 7PRC ammo was released by Hornady my grandson was having extreme pressure with a few boxes. We were only buying factory ammo to get brass to reload. I broke down and inspected the powder. There was clearly three different powders and 3 different powder charge weights. I know many will keep buying Hornady factory ammo but I can't ever recommend it. The good thing now is you can get great 7 PRC brass from other sources.

Same in my 26” PVA Osprey barrel. Been shooting it for years and it does great out past 1000 yards in matches.
