Break question/poll...

It's not just a noise thing it's also a concusive pressure wave that disrupts other shooters on benches close to you. This does vary with brake port angles clamshell style seems to be the worst IMHO. BTW I do have brakes on a couple rifles.

Interesting conversation and comments from all. I has a custom brake installed on my wife's 257 Wthby and it really helps after the rotator surgery she had a few years ago. When she shoots with other people around, she lets them know it going to be very loud. Hearing protection works fine. Can't tell any difference in accuracy or POI with or without it.

This is actually a good discussion.

I shoot pistols with rifle cartridges. Even without brakes, they are louder than the rifle because the gas is released closer to the peak pressure. I do what I can to make sure hearing protection is in place for everyone. "Getting blasted" is NEVER a good thing for anyone, and avoiding it is necessary. I've already suffered major hearing loss, and its never OK to take that lightly.

I should be receiving a barrel chambered in 338-284 any time now, and that one will carry a brake. For general range use, I plan on using discression when I use it. Putting some distance between fellow shooters, or breaking the thing out off peak shooting hours should go a long ways.

Bottom line... think a little about the other folks shooting with you.
