Break-in Help

Got word that my new Savage 6mmBR is on its way from the gunsmith. He has his own formula for breaking it in and that's fine. What I needed some help on was a good starting point as far as a bullet and load. I will be sighting in the scope and breaking it in at the same time. 29 or 30 grains of Varget and a 105 grain bullet seems to be a standard of sorts. What are your thoughts on this? Would you start with the bullet at the lands, in or out .015"?

Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Could get some high pressure from a hot load going in a new rough throat. I usually start with less powder and around .020" jump.

My first 10 rounds for a new chamber are for sight in, break in, and working up to max load.

First thing I would do is give the smith a call and ask him.

I like German Salazar's method best.

I don't doubt that Mr. Salazar is the hot ticket but though the links will take me to his site there are no barrel break-in steps to read. This is in two browsers. In any case, my biggest concern is a safe load to start out with using a 105, 95, 80 or 65 Bergers or 90 grain Scenars and Varget. Though it appears most folks jam the bullet (at least the 105s) .015", it would seem that keeping the bullet out of the lands for the break-in would be best. Do you agree?

OK here is another gentleman's point of view.

Gale McMillan was a rather notable barrel maker. Rest His soul.
