brass quality

Looking to purchase some once fired or possibly new commercial brass. Looking at lapua or hornandy in new or LC LR once fired. My question is my current setup uses FGMM brass which is pretty much not available. How much effect will changing brass have on my current load? I really don't want to have to re develop just because I changed my brass.

To me when I change anything it changes something. Between hornady and lapua , get lapua. Just plan on testing with the new brass. Its not a matter of a new load as it is refining your old one with the new brass.

You didn't say what caliber or distance your trying to shoot.

sorry .308 win. Distances are from 200-1200 yards right now I get about a half moa. I know the consistency is helpful just curious how much wall thickness and pressures may effect the grouping.

They'll all have an effect, but none probably so much as LC LR; on that one in particular, be checking case capacity first even when considering the published minimum loads.

Skip even thinking about LC although it can be good brass. Buy the Lapua and look forward to many high quality reloads per case.

This is the one basic rule for reloading. When you change a variable, re-test. But based on the life span of Lapua brass, the next change will be way off.:D

Regards.

I don't like purchasing used brass, you never know what you are going to get until it is in your hands.
If you have chronographed the loads you have, you should be able to get any quality brass to match your loads. Just work up until you find the same velocity. For .308 brass I would be looking for new Lapua Palma brass as I believe it is very consistent.JMO dedogs

I got into a little trouble when I was just getting into this game. I was using Federal brass and had a good load working for me. Then, I bought a thousand LC and loaded a bunch with my "old load". Got high pressure, sticky bolt lift and a good lesson about case capacity and it's affects on pressure. Had to pull 200 apart. Any change will need a new work up. Good time to start annealing after every firing, too. I found it helps my accuracy. Good luck. After a few years of experience, I'd say get the Lapua.

Since you state you are presently using FGGM brass, have you done an internet search for FGGM brass, I've seen it offered by at least one internet seller ??

Lapua is hard to beat.......... Buy New shop smart.
I went for a deal once ! once fired .308 Lupua , Guy said light load .
I didn't ask in what it was shot in ? It was a Gas Gun . JUNK .

New ...... Brass

Hey! I just saw some federal GMM brass on the sale board, HERE. The guy's got 1500 pieces left.

If you use new Lapua brass and your loads don't shoot well you can eliminate the brass as the cause. Saves time that way.
