Brass Prep????

I hope I'm not beating this dead horse again. I have a 7mmWSM being built. It is FAR from finished. I have 200 new WW cases. I have a set of Redding match S dies ordered. I have .311, .312, .313 bushings. Sinclair also sent me an expander die with a 7mm madrel. I'm not sure why. I have been reloading for many years but am new to the bushing style. I also have a RCBS primer flash hole de-burer. I'm not going to turn necks. What are the steps I need to take?

The new case necks are not round, dent's, etc. I really don't want any "extra" steps in my reloading procces, re; sizing, then decapping, then seating, etc.

I need your expertise please.

As with any brand new cases they should be run through a sizing die to get all the kinks out before loading them.

My preferance on new brass is to run just the sizing button in them then remove the button and resize the entire case without the button.

Buzzsaw,

If you plan to use WW brass you better measure it and have your reamer made to fit the brass. The use the reamer to cut your dies.

Fact is, prep. you brass first then send it to your reamer maker, let him make the reamer fit your brass. Reamer fits brass, brass fits chamber, dies resize brass to fit chamber. When you find the bullet that works best for you have the throat cut to fit also. Or if you have some bullet in mind make up a dumby round and send it to your reamer maker. If you are going to have a rifle made have it made right.

Get rid of the expander button in your sizing die and replace it with the "dummy" button that should come with your Redding die. Use the 7mm mandrel to straighten out the necks in your new brass. Make sure not to chamfer the case necks until after you've ran them into the expander mandrel. Always chamfer the inside last.

The expander mandrel will not work your brass as hard as an expander button on a sizing die will. The button tends to stretch the cases as it expands the neck.

If you want the best solution, have Dave Kiff at Pacific set you up with a chambering reamer and a resizing die reamer. Yes, you can use a chambering reamer to set up a sizing die BUT it will have to be a bushiong die becasue the neck needs to be sized a bit under the chamber neck dimensions. Shoulder bump could be problematic because the shoulder might be left at too large a diameter and you have to take into account brass spring-back.

In all actuality though, off the shelf dies will do everything you need them to unless you are a benchrester looking for groups in the .1s and .0s. Matter of fact, some of the folks shooting the 6mm brs are regularily in the .1s with of the shelf dies and good technique.

I have had problems with some new WW brass and neck cracks after ist or second fireing, 308, 3006 and 270. So I anel all my WW brass right off the bat.
