Brass differences

First off, I'll state that I'm new here. Second I've read the blurb in the FAQ section. My question is- is it just the neck lenght and base width where the differences lie? Headspace datum line is in the same Place?

I've got a new set of Redding dies for my new 6mm Br, but it seems most places are out of Lapua brass. I'd like to get my die set up, and have a small assortment of Remington BR brass that I could press into service if that would work.

Thanks,

Kaiser Norton

Just got Lapua brass from www.gunstop.com.,the only place that had any in stock) I have Lapua and Norma brass that I am going to try out and see for myself if one is better than the other.

This might not help much, but in my rifle, Lapua brass works just fine but Norma brass had a tendency to stick in the chamber.

JohnO: Were the loads the same in the Norma brass compared to the "other" brass that you were using?
The reason I ask is that I have the same loads in Lapua and Norma brass and plan to see if there is a difference in fit and function. Just trying to see what, if any, problems that other folks have had between different brass mfgs. Everyone says that Lapua brass is the way to go, but?? If we had never heard of Lapua brass, what would we be using? Mike.

Mike,

German Salazar, who often posts here, has shot quite a bunch of Norma 6BR brass and he said it is excellent for "normal" loads. He did tell me the Lapua seems to hold up a little better with max loads. But there are a lot of European Shooting teams that use the Norma 6BR factory ammo and they do well with it.

For the last few years the Lapua was cheaper to purchase, so there was no reason to go with Norma. Now that we are in a shortage situation, hopefully short-lived), more people may try Norma.

BTW, thanks much for the contribution to the site!!

Paul: Contribution? My pleasure! There's no such thing as a "free lunch". And I can't see one person footing the bill when this place has so much information to sift through.;)
It looks like the situation with the Lapua brass is still tight. I guess I lucked out when I was able to get mine. The Norma brass is good looking stuff so I can't see it being a problem. Time at the bench will be the real test. Looks like German Salazar and a few others are the folks to listen to. Sure beats going through the same things that they have just to get to the same results. Been there and done that sure is better than running into problems and wondering how I got here and trying to figure a way out! Practical experience can't be beat! And the willingness of folks to share their experiences makes 6mmBR.com the place to be!! Thanks for the info and 6mmBR.com! Mike.

I'm still shooting the Norma brass along with the Lapua. No issues at all with the Norma, yesterday I shot it at 1000 yards with my 2750 fps load and it hammered,Lapua 105 moly, 30.0 Varget, CCI BR4 primer). Cases were on their 13th loading.

I'm also going to run some norma head to head with lapua...curious to see what will happen. Now if only i could get the gun put together! :D

Al Matson, the infamous Alinwa, which stands for Al in Washington by the way) once told me that the Norma was softer and that he would work up a load using Norma to the point of wrecking brass then switch to Lapua and use that load for more testing.

Al you lurk here from time to time, do you still feel that way or what's your current opinion on Norma?

If you haven't read any of Al's posts here or elsewhere, let me say it's a treat since his writing style is unorthodox to say the least. But when it comes to the 6BR Al's tried about everything possible and then some!
