Brass cleanliness?

Hello all,

I recently purchased some of the stainless tumbling media as advertised on here, and the main reason I purchased it was was to support them because they support the site. I always thought my brass was clean enough (occasional ultrasonic cleaning) until I used this stuff. The stuff is amazing, I almost can't believe it, completely spotless case inside and out as well as primer pockets. My question is should I do this every time? Is that mirror finish on the inside of my case and case neck going to be more consistent , and shoot better, then my usual carboned up necks? Can you get your brass to clean? Anyone else wondered this?

Have a good one,
John

I've cut my cleaning time down to 2-3 hours. I clean brass every time. There's certainly no need, but once you start doing prep with very clean brass, it's hard to go back to slumming. ;)

I am starting to notice the same thing. The process of reloading is greatily sped up, and more enjoyable when you never have to brush cases and dig the carbon out of primer pockets. Do you notice any difference as far as accuracy is concerned?

I would expect that the answer to this question is somewhat like the age old question as to whether coffee tastes better from an old cup you never washed.

I kind of like to think that if one's interested in absolute consistency, that's easier to achieve with a totally clean case than with one that's all carbon'd up. Just how much carbon is there? If it doesn't matter then why are we all brushing out the case necks? Cleaning the primer pockets?

Maybe one of these days I'll take some cases and do a before and after weight check. Etch the "before" weight on a few filthy cases and then weigh them again after cleaned in SS media. Should be interesting how much carbon that might attach itself to a .308 case.

When I first started with SS media I tumbled for a couple of hours. Now when I get back from the range I just pop out the primers and toss it in the tumbler for 15 minutes. That's all I need. Cleans it back to factory new.

No... that level of detection is beyond my equipment and capabilities.

I just enjoy the labor of loading more when I'm not working in filth.

I heard it described once that "you wouldn't expect a meal to taste good when eaten off a dirty plate".
