brass cleaning

Hi,
I started a couple of month ago with reloading.
I still have some doubt concerning the brass cleaning.
Precisely, to clean the primer seat and the inside part, is it better to use a ultra-sonic cleaner or a tumbler?
Using one of those, after cleaning, do I have anyway to clean by hand?

Let me know please
thanks!

bye

It is best to use a primer pocket uniformer to clean the residue out of your primer pockets. Cleaning brass is a waste of time in my opinion. All you get for your effort is pretty ammo.

Hi rayfromtx,
thanks for your answer.
That's interesting,'cause a friend of mine with which I spoke during my lunch brake, told me the same.
But as you know, after a tumbler "treatment", is it necessary to still use the primer pocket uniformer?

thanks a lot!
take care

I'm a minimalist like Ray. I soak my brass overnight in carburator cleaner and let it air dry. Nothing more. The carb cleaner gets rid of most of the primer pocket residue. The lot of brass for my varmint gun has been cleaned this way and loaded 14 times with no decrease in accuracy at all.

Brass cleaning can be necessary if you shoot pistols or semi automatic rifles. For manual feed rifles cleaning with a tumbler is more hassle than it's worth. Media takes a lot of work to get out of the case and If you don't get it all out it's going through your bore. The only process that I know of that will clean the inside of the case and pocket is ultrasonic. I've never used one so I can't really comment. Primer pocket residue will build up and does need to be cleaned out after a few firings.

I clean the outside of the brass when I wipe the lube off after resizing and use a primer pocket uniformer lightly by hand to knock out the primer residue, trying not to remove to much brass).

Mike--
Once the primer pockets have been done with a uniformer they should never cut any more brass out of the pocket unless your running them into really, really hot territory.
The pockets should be cleaned after every firing for consistency if for nothing else..

If I was going to buy anything to clean brass cases it would be another Ultra Sonic..

Use a primer pocket uniformer to clean the primer pocket out and a bore brush to clean the inside of the necks. That's all that is needed. Anything else is just shiny ammo.

I clean my brass after neck sizing every time using a vibrator cleaner and corn cob media with Dilon polish.

I use a Crocagator to clean the carbon out of the primer pockets.

The short amount of extra time is sell worth it to me and it makes the cases MUCH more presentable and easier to tell apart from other shooter's brass. Also gets the dust and loose carbon flakes out of the brass.

Life jsut seems to short to shot "dirty" brass.
