brass annealing question

i was just reading the annealing article and i was wondering why Rich DeSimone soaks his brass in CLR after heating? is there a benefit to using CLR vs. water?

thanks,
Jeremy

clr has phosphoric acid in it that is the same active ingredient in iosso case cleaner. it loosens up carbon in side and outside the case. treeman

Treeman hit the nail on the head. I use the Iosso case cleaner, rinse in hot water, then when dry I tumble them in corn cobb media. This two step process leaves the cases almost as clean as a virgin case. This ensures that when I pre-load ammo w/ the bullet seated long for a match many monthes away, I can go back and adjust the seating depth to the throat length of the particular barrel I am shooting. I don't have to worry about the bullet being "cold welded" in the neck from chemical reactions between the residue, the bullet, and the neck.

This has happened to me in the past and when I went to seat the bullets deeper on pre-loaded ammo that sat for three monthes. The shoulder collapsed and the bullet stayed firmly in the neck! I keep one of those cases on my reloading bench as a reminder of why I have gone to the above case clean process.
