Brand new chambered barrel, what`s it worth???

Phil

Gold $$ Contributor
I have a brand new,name brand, barrel.

Chambered,crowned,threaded....ready to be put on and fired, all work done by a well known smith.

Considering changing directions with project,

What is this barrel worth???

P.S. I`m being vague on purpose because i`m not 100% on this decision yet.

Its a H/V profile and a stainless barrel.

I don't know what it's worth, but it's worth more to someone that doesn't have to change anything. Changing anything is almost as much as a completely new thread and chamber.

Phil: A lot more information is needed before you can expect an intelligent answer. Is it a Krieger or an ER Shaw barrel? Big, big difference in their values. Threaded for what action? Bat, Panda, Rem. 700, or a Mauser 98? Who threaded and chambered the barrel? A big name professional or Joe Schmuck? Chambered for what cartridge? Big difference between one of the popular cartridges, and some obscure wildcat. Barrel twist rate?

Except for the custom actions I mentioned, like the Panda & Bat, it would not be a "drop-in" fit, so some additional professional work would be required before it is usable to the buyer, at additional cost, of course.

And I could go on and on.

Depends on what the cartridge, free-bore and action it's chambered for and the contour of the barrel. As GSPV said, it is worth more if it can be used as-is. If it can't be used as-is, then it would probably be worth more if it is a long fat barrel that can be set back and re-chambered for a different action and cartridge. But whatever it is other than a brand new untouched blank in a popular contour, I would be very surprised if you could get what you paid for the blank out of it. I once sold a barrel with a muzzle brake installed chambered for a popular cartridge and threaded for the buyers type of action and I got the cost of the blank alone. I ate the cost of the chamber, threading and muzzle break. Basically sold it for about half of what I had in it. But the buyer had to have the barrel head-spaced for his action and a lot of what a smith charges for a chambering job is the set-up time in the lathe which is needed for a match-grade result. I hope you can do better. But as Frank said, more information about your barrel might get you better estimates and maybe some interest.

Krieger
.30BR
.010 freebore
18 twist
Threaded for Bat
Professional smith,NO junk here

New, never fied.....any ideas on where i stand???

Phil,

From your description, you have a barrel that is very good, but it is only worth what someone is willing to pay regardless of how much it took to pay for the blank and machine time.

I would put up a Classified add at the price of the blank and see what happens. That sounds like a barrel that would interest people that shoot BR for score but they might still want to allow something for the cost of making sure that the barrel was fitted correctly on their action.

Now that's good information that can mean a lot in a sale. If I wanted a 30BR chambering, (had one a year ago), I'd be willing to pay around $275 for it. Not saying that's what it's worth, just what I would pay.

A lot of this has been cleared up, but what model of BAT is it threaded for, one thread size don't fit all.....

I know someone with an SV looking for a barrel, I'll let him know.
