Brake Recommendations??

Irv Benzion

Gold $$ Contributor
Need to put a brake on a Tikka 270 Win. Mag. This is a very light weight hunting rifle and need to reduce recoil. Any recommendations? A Harrell was suggested. What do you think?

Thanks,

Irv Benzion

Having never used a Harrel brake, I can not comment on it.

I have used and have several Ross Schuler brakes in 3, 4, and 5 gill types,
on my SP pistols in 284 and 280AI cases with rifles scopes and they work,
recoil is NO problem, tames them right down, NO more scope eye marks. ::)

Just some more info to add to what you have now.

Try them, you'll like em.
As with ALL brakes, they are loud. ;)

If you can wait a little while, it looks like there will be a pretty interesting review coming out:

FWIW, on sporter barrels, I always liked the KDF brake because it's pretty low key in terms of looks.

Muzzlebrakesandmore sells the ross design. I have used them a lot. I personally have a 5 port on a 338lm i can shoot free recoil

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that proper and equal clearance have about the same or more to do with brake effectiveness as does design. IME, there are small improvements in design differences, but large ones in installation.

If the test above doesn't factor exit clearance into the test, I would consider it invalid.

A radial brake is not as disruptive (noisy / blast) as brakes ported to the side. The brakes that are ported to the side are more effective in reducing recoil. A good friend in Texas has made radial brakes for (2) rifles in .338LM and they have proven to be quite effective. I have a TC Encore 7mm08 with a 15" barrel and radial brake that is a pleasure to shoot and quite accurate, also a 6.5x55AI that recoils less than a .223/5.56. Get recommendations before buying an aftermarket unit.

Ross schuler..... i have 8?? Of em on 8 different rifles... all 3 ports and one 5 port on a 338 LM... they are the best ive ever seen and priced right... its dumb to pay more for some other brake..

I would use a RAS TB-870 From Bostromgunsmithing.com Not only do you have a Brake it has a Tuner also. Perfect for small barrel hunting guns and AR- 10 and AR-15. Larry

If hunting prone from a bipd you may want to stick to brakes that don't have ports on the bottom and will kick up a lot of dust. Just somthing to think about.
