BR4 vs #41 primers

You really just have to test them. The 41s are just magnum primers with durable cups to prevent slam fires in military arms. As a general rule, using the least energetic primer that will work is advised. But so much of the ignition process is unknown to us that pragmatically you need to test if you want to sort them out. The powder used matters.

The CCI #41 is a magnum type primer with the angle of the anvil changed and as mentioned a thicker cup making the primer less sensitive. The CCI BR 4 is a standard (non-magnum) type primer which is supposedly made under better controlled lots by more senior employees making for more uniform repeatability.

As to which primer to use? Between the two I let the powder choice decide. With ball, flake and spherical powders I like the CCI #41 and with stick powders the BR 4 primers. Even that is not the ideal solution so for the most part, like others, I look for which primer works best with which powder in which rifle.

The below results were obtained using 26.1 grains of H335 powder seated below a 53 grain Sierra #1400 HP bullet. All cases were uniform LC 11 brass.

The CCI #41 actually gave me the best group of the four CCI primers used.

Cup thickness matters on harmonics. Thats why some primers seem to be tuned more than others. Once you find the right one and need to change usually a simple seating depth tweak will bring it back in
