I have a bit of a dilemma with a pair of stocks that I'm having made. Without getting into the messy details, what I'm wondering is how inconvenient would it be to have a fore end that was not one of the two standard sizes--2-1/4" or 3"?
The stocks are for varmint rifles that I intend to take out and shoot in the local IBS Long Range match. I'd like to avoid laminates, but the thickest blanks I have are only 2-3/4" thick. My usual wood supplier only has 2 blanks 3" or over, so I'm considering a narrower fore end. Laminating on the extra width is feasible, but if it really isn't a big deal to be 1/4" narrower, it'd be nice to avoid that.
So, what do you think? Am I making a mountain out of a molehill?
