BR Investment $$$ Requirements?

As someone who would like to shoot long range BR,600 yard), and is completely new, and has zero equipment, could someone give me an idea of the investment required to obtain the following:

Competitive 6mmBR rifle.
Scope and rings.
Rests,front and rear).
All reloading tools and equipment, plus brass, powder, bullets, primers, etc. I was thinking of Forster and Redding tools.

I estimate a used rifle at $2,300, the scope at $1,000, rests for maybe $500?. I have no idea on reloading equipment as I have never done it. It does not appear that a moderate amount of ammo consumables is all that much.

Would $5,000 cover it all? Good enough to be competitive in a match?

Thanks.

Good Question.

First, there's the Savage turn-key solution. About $1000-$1100 for the gun, plus optics. If you get lucky with the barrel, the Savage can be competitive in F-Class and club-level 600-yard matches.

For a custom action, a "bare-bones" rig might be a Stiller Predator Action,$700), Shilen Trigger,$100.00), MBR-style stock,Shehane, Russo, MasterClass, Kelbly),$350.00), Custom Barrel,$300), plus gunsmithing, barrel fitting/chambering and bedding),$300-$500). That's $1750 minimum and you need to add rings, a scope base, and buy your reloading gear. And 8-32X 30mm Sightron, rings and base will take a big bite out of $1000.00.

You also need a good rear bag and front rest...that can get pricey.

I'm a firm believer in the Savage system. You can buy a Savage, have the action tricked by Fred Moreo, bedded, and screw on a match grade barrel from Pac Nor, Shilen, McGowan, Sharp Shooter Supply, and spend a fraction of what you would spend on a custom BR rig.

I have both custom rigs and a Savage and from a cost comparison analysis; Savage is the way to go.

What do I mean by that?

I'm not shooting against Tony Boyer or any of the top guys and have no desire to do so. I shoot and compete in local groundhog matches and love to shoot against myself for accuracy.

Several years ago I was going to build a new switch barrel single shot rifle. It was going to be based on a custom action, Jewell trigger, several match grade barrels, bedding, stock, etc. My project quickly amounted to $3500.00 without optics.
I bought a Savage single shot rifle put together by Fred Moreo of Sharp Shooter Supply for less than a third of the above figure. I have many custom switch barrels for the rig and am extremely happy. I hold my own at the local matches and even kick some of the guy's butts who have $5000.00 rigs.

Your choice, your money.

LHSMITH it happens ALOT .....shop around dont get stuck with 1 smith....and make SURE YOU have all the parts before you send anything to him.

I have had a TREMENDOUS amount of success with the following formula:

Buy a 30BR Viper from George in KY.

Borrow his sized brass and some bullets and his seater die.

Wednesday when the rifle comes in put a 36x Weaver on top and buy some H4198.

Thursday load up his cases and bullets with the amount of 4198 he said to use.

Friday take the 30BR Viper to the range and fire one shot. Click the crosshairs over to the hole and fire another shot. Couple of clicks more and fire a third shot. Go home.

Saturday go to your 4th ever BR match and 2nd ever score match. Get 3rd place overall and write "WOW" in the gun's notebook.

your just plain lucky rayjay ! LOL......
P.S i'll have a 30BR drop port in a gene beggs ulralite stock for sell in a few weeks ;).....

George, I have my own design metal stock that I am working on. I thought about buying the Viper action you had for sale and using the 30BR bbl off the first Viper [ aka The Laser Beam } I bought from you.

I have this philosophy of "If it ain't broke don't fix it" so I am NOT messing with the Laser Beam.

What I really want to do is get a RBLP DP Viper with a PPC bolt face and chamber two bbls, one 6 Beggs and the other bbl in 30PPC. This is why I didn't buy your action.
