Boyd's walnut stocks

I've been looking at Boyd's walnut stocks and for a few $$ more I can upgrade to XX walnut. Just curious as to if any of you have done this and if its worth the extra money? The stock I'm looking at is only about $50-$60 more for the XX wood. I bought a maple stock from them years ago and was very pleased with it. Any pictures? I'd love to see them please.

Went back last evening and checked my prices. Its about $100 difference in wood prices and $60 if I add checkering. All in all about $360 for a XX walnut stock with checkering. I'm just wondering if the extra $100 is worth it over the standard grade walnut??

I can't speak to the quality of thier walnut, though I will say I was pleased with the 2 stocks I purchased from Boyd's.
Personally I'd roll the dice @ $360 for a finished stock.

My experience with Boyd's was mearly ok. If your rifle is an exact match to their profile, it will probably be close to 95-98% fit. Otherwise 80% or less and a fair amount of work will be necessary. My stock fit poorly, required a lot of work and had many defects. So much so, they sent me another, which lacked the crossbolts, palm cap and was the wrong LOP, oh well. I chose the laminated material, for mine, so cant speak to the walnut. With my expectations properly metered, I will order another from them, but I don't expect anything more than a rough fit from them now.

Boyd's stocks.

Don't get me started on this, but you asked......

Bought my first Boyd's AT-ONE about 6 years ago. Didn't have any fitting issues but soon found out the the front receiver screw kept getting loose. After tightening it down the screw jammed against the bolt and locked it up.

After loosing the screw the bolt would work but it just needed to be tighter. I noticed that the piece that the screw head was tightening against was nylon material and the screw head was just seating down into the nylon.

Contacted Boyd's and after several calls they gave me a RMA to send it back to replace the nylon piece. After 4 months and several. phone calls to inquire about the repair or replacement I got several excuses, the techs were busy, it's in que, etc...

I needed the stock because the 600 yd events were coming up and I wanted to have the gun ready.

Well they sent my stock back the same condition that I sent it to them. No work was done on it.

So I installed a washer between the screw head and the nylon piller. Took care if the issues for a short time. Then a month latter I noticed that the laminate was split under the receiver.

Ok, I needed to take manners in my own hand because Boyd's would not do anything about it.

I ended up using steel pillars and epoxy them in, also bedded the action in the stock. Problem solved.

About a year latter I decided to build a 6 CM. I knew the issues with Boyd's and also new what I needed to do to the stocks before hand. Purchased another AT-ONE stock, pillared and bedded the action. Now issue with the second build.

About a month ago I wanted to up grade my Factory F gun with a wood stock.

Ordered another stock , this one was a varmit profile. Stock came and there was a flaw in the finish, about a 1.5" dent in the wood. Contacted Boyd's, sent them pictures of the dent on the same day the stock arrived via Fedex.

They told me that I should sand the stock down to remove the dent and finish off with a Satin spray finish.

I knew I was going down a rabbit hole with them again. I kept the stock and pillared and bedded the action to prevent any issue that I have had in the past.

Their prices are good and the stocks look good, but buyer beware if you have any issues with the quality or warranty..

Just my experience with Boyd's.

Body's makes a good "utility" stock. I have three of them on varmint rifles. If you want a stock to make your rifle look good, I would go somewhere else. Would not send them money for upgrades. Hope you're handy with wood working tools.

Marlin 336 but mainly just wanting to see if the XX grade is $100 nicer than standard grade. One guy said after he removed Boyd's finish and did his own it looked pretty good. Not exactly what I was wanting to do. If I have to refinish a stock, I'll just do the one I have. i looked at some of the other brands that are 90% but i don't have the tools or skills to inlet.

What action are you getting this stock
All 3 actions were Savage Model 12. 6.5CM, Brux barrel, light gun class, 6mm Creedmoor, Krieger barrel, light gun class and last a bone stock model 12, 6.5CM Savage for F class.

I do like the AT-ONE for bench rest, I did some modifications to them for my front rest and rear bag. The bag rider and for-end where not one the same level. Made a bag rider for the rear that was level with the for end so I could slide the gun forward without having to readjust the scope for the target

I've ordered from Boyd's several times and have no complaints. My last stock was for a 788 and I ordered maple with checkering and I must say it is outstanding. Everytime I take it to the club I get compliments on it. The stock on my 336 isn't bad at all, it just has two sling swivel stud holes that are stripped and one is in the wrong area, the fore-end. I can probably repair the holes but didn't really want to refinish the complete stock. But I guess I could.

They price their stuff pretty reasonable. You're going to get what you pay for. If you look at good walnut blanks you'll find they are priced higher than the Boyd's finished. I don't own a complete Boyd's stock but I bought a laminated blank one time and made a stock for a Savage stagger feed action. It was decent. When you buy a factory mass produced item you get just that. They provide a good service for people that don't want to pay for custom work. Hand work costs money but someone like Kobe will make you smile for what you get. Their finish is decent but Bc'z is going to be many steps above because he is a wizard and does magical stuff but it takes time and costs more.

I have always been tempted to try this out too. I have only ever seen pics of the standard walnut and they look great.

So if you do end up getting one, even if you return it, please post some pics!

I have a few Boyd's stocks and they are pretty good, and I did not have any fitting problems. On the other hand, their customer service is atrocious and if you have a problem, you will have trouble getting them to respond satisfactorily. I did re-stock a Reminton 721 in a walnut stock and the walnut is the most plain jane I have ever seen. I hope someone can answer the op's question as I would gladly pay an extra 100 bucks for nicer grained walnut even if it isn't really AA walnut. AA walnut should have at least 25% fancy figure behind wrist on both sides.

If your 336 has some age, I'd plug those stripped holes and refinish. You are likely to find sound American Black Walnut. Not highly figured, but sound Walnut, none the less. Better walnut than Boyds uses. I own 3. 1 made in '53 and a SRC made in '60, and a rifle length .32 Special , with 1/2 magazine, made in '59. Solid American Black Walnut on those. Newer models may have lesser wood, but still American Black.
