Boyds Gunstocks... snafu or fubar

i am now where i would rather the call health insurance marketplace. begin rant:

i 'attempted' to place an order online over the weekend... got to the screen with a payment approved message but also a banner that maybe said an error occured... call boyds cs. ok. i have called 6 times this week and not once gotten a live person on the line. finally they called me, we were working the problem, the call got dropped, they called back 6 hours later, i missed the call, and i am back at start, with the following exception:

the last message left they appeased me by offering free shipping for my troubles (nice enough) but said i would need to call to place the order and explain the situation to get the free shipping. i have a cs rep name, but she cleverly did not give me her direct extension in, so i'm back in the cue. :end rant

would you run a business that way, or do they have the market locked up so tight it doesn't matter?

Market wrapped up? For cut rate priced stocks, I'd say yes. Unless you're looking for some oddball stuff, for another 100 or less, one can usually find a solid H.S. Precision takeoff or aluminum bedded B&C stock. More money, more stock, McMillan, Manners, etc.

Good or bad...I get my stocks from Stocky's. Never had a problem. Matter of fact, I bought a stock from them at the start of a build. By the end of the build I decided I didn't care for the stock. This was 4 months later. They took the stock back and sent me another different one with no shipping cost.

They are subject to the same problems all other businesses are. If they are snowed under things can get dicey. Also things can get messed up with the simple order process. Murphy doesn't discriminate. Stuff happens and with surprising regularity when online ordering is involved. It is usually much better to just call and talk to a person. At least you have someone to shoot at when you find out you were talking to Murphy.

A good shooting buddy got a hold of the gal who occasionally answers the phone there. He said she was about as pleasant and helpfull as playing with a cactus. If you can't get it done online they don't want your business.

I called from a retailer standpoint a number of weeks ago.

I was told that the stock would need slight modifications for the gun to fit however when I told them I had slightly modified the stock to fit the gun I was told there was no warranty. Lady in the line said send pictures and we'll see if we can do anything.

All this because a magazine didn't quite fit. Got the mag to fit on my on my own however it took a number of phone calls to try to get through as well as many non-returned voicemails.

businesses figured out that buyers don't realize their time is valuable too. They put in phone trees and recordings to make sure you really want to talk to them before they let you. They waste a lot of your time before you get a second of theirs. I don't have the patience. If I can't order online and pay digitally, I generally find somewhere else to buy it.

PS I have no experience with boyds.

Here's another data point.

After a frustrating ordering event with McMillan I now buy all my stocks from Boyd's. Not only was the ordering process difficult requiring several phone calls, the stock took a significant amount of work to finish and cost roughly five times the price of a Boyd's. Plus the McMillan stock took five months to arrive. I also ordered a Richards Microfit stock some time ago and it was a disappointment too.

This year I've purchased two Boyd's stocks. They took only a few moments to order and were delivered quickly; in less than 10 days if I remember correctly. The fit is perfect, the finish is flawless, and the price is not only good, it's is surprisingly good considering the quality.

I don't doubt the OP's story, but I have never experienced any difficulty like that and my next stock will definitely be from Boyd's.

I just ordered my third stock from Boyds. Ordering was easy and delivery was fast. They did say that they would send you an email when it was shipped. They did not. This is for a Savage top bolt release. The trigger guard never fits. The bolt release would not go down all the way no matter where I relieved it. I sent them an email and asked if they had a solution for it. They told me to take it to a gunsmith.

If you order a stock from them, do not EXPECT it to fit. A Dremel Tool and some chisels are needed. If you do not possess some mechanical skills, think twice about ordering from them. Would I order another one, yes. They are a steal for the money.

I've ordered several from Boyds. Never had an issue. All required installation of pillars and minor fitting. But the question is not what happens when the online ordering goes OK, but when you have an issue. It's tough if a knowledgable person can't be tasked to answer the phone but that is the case with a lot of companies. They can't just put some $12 an hour person on the phone to deal with technically involved questions.

I've ordered more McMillans and typically had a better experience with them (and you pay for it). Even then, last time I called, they started asking for barrel measurements I'd never had to give before but claimed it was standard and were adamant I was wrong and they always asked for it. Their stocks have always been drop-in for me other than prepping them for bedding.

I ordered the AT-One for my CZ455 build. I was able to order the stock, as I wanted it, online except for the target fore end and grip inserts. I called them for those and they answered the phone promptly and added them to my order. The stock arrived and (to my surprise) was a drop-in fit; even the floor plate. I was disappointed with the target grip insets because they were warped and didn't fit together on the front. After a brief discussion with Melissa at Boyd's I returned them for replacement. The replacement pair looked just like the original Melissa said they got a bad shipment from the supplier. She apologized, removed the cost of the part from my CC and, once the new ones arrived (two weeks), sent me a new set that fit correctly at no charge.

I had the same problem with 419. I didn't want to put my credit card out on line. No phone number. sent an email for number. No answer. I guess they didn't want my business.
