Borescope Picture of Firecracking

Recently purchased a cheap borescope off Amazon and scoped my old Weatherby .270. This is the throat. What am I looking at? Is it shot or is this normal? Also, any ideas where I can go to learn about what is “normal” in the barrel.

That is just heat checking/fire cracking which is normal as barrels age, especially on fire breathing dragons like this. Nothing is missing at this point, so as long as it shoots OK and you can clean it up without too much effort you are good to go. Can't really answer your 2nd question but I think that Hawkeye folks may have a video that would help. It's really more of an experience thing, but remember that no matter what you see it's what happens on the target that matters most. The best use for a borescope is simply to help you learn to clean your barrels with the least amount of effort. Good luck with it and have fun learning.

Your bore looks like new compared to this one. This is severe "fire cracking" erosion. Barrel is a stock Remington chrome moly 24" in .260 Rem. Round count was exactly 3026 shots, fired mostly with H4350. It was still shooting good before I replaced it.

Shoot that puppy .What you are seeing is normal. Tommy Mc. Look down the barrel of a new gun, and compare . yours is in the good range..

Be aware that things are not always what we think they are, especially with a borescope. Something you perceive to be down into the surface may actually be ABOVE the surface.

I have an old Bencherest rifle made by old man Douglas in 22/250, Springfield action, with 30" 1.100 straight tube after some straight at the chamber end.

This rifle shoots tiny groups with a bore condition that is simply unbelievable. I clean the copper out every 35 rounds, brush with a good bronze bristle brush...the barrel just keeps on shooting amazing groups.

NO one would believe how well this klunker of a rifle shoots.

For a hunting rifle or informal(fun) target rifle, many barrels just keep on shooting if you keep the copper and powder out of them. Often going to a bullet with more bearing surface and less BC will cure a lot of group problems. VLD bullets will only jump so far before the accuracy is gone, and those vld bullets like what they like on a jump...what ever that is.
