Bore Tech Cu+2 Vs sweets vs wipeout.

Hey all,

I was looking to experiment with a few copper removers. I know there is a wide range of opinions. I currently use wipe out accelerator, with wipe out foam. By morning, the foam dripping out of the end of the barrel is a beautiful nuclear radiation bright blue. It never ceases to amaze me.
I also have a bottle of sweets, as potent as that stuff is, it does not seem to get out as much as the overnight methods. I know some will recommend Montana extreme which I have as well. But I read you cannot use with Dewey rods. So last is the Boretech, I have read a lot of good about it, and seems highly reviewed. So how does it compare with wipe-out?

Lots of info out there.. You are not he first to do this test. I read a report/test a few years ago comparing copper cleaners. I have various brands here, as well as JB Bore Paste. FWIW I quit using wipe out. Seems I never could get the blue to stop. At this time I am using CR-10 for copper.. That could change ..

I’d like to ad md one other question to this thread. After pushing a heavy duty solvent down the bore, What should I push a patch of next to neutralize it? Hoppe, butches, etc.....

I use either until dry then an oily patch everytime then one dry patch just to pick up the excess oil unless it's getting stored , then I leave it... This is about all I use hoppes for anymore...

I’ve been using Wipeout foam + accellerator for the past year and it works well for me, with a caveat.

Some of my barrels clean more easily than others. For example, the barrel on my .204 Ruger (Savage FCV) cleans quickly with one or at most two applications if I leave the foam in the barrel for a couple of hours. The barrel on my .223 Savage LRPV requires several applications over a day or two, including an all-nighter. Both rifles are tack drivers before and after cleaning. My .17HMR Anschutz is pristine after only one application.

With Wipeout, I see different layers of stuff: “Nuclear blue” is the copper, dark grey is the carbon and “brown sludge” is . . . what? Unburned powder residue?? I clean until all that stuff is out.

My problem with Wipeout foam is that it’s supremely messy. When I first started using it, the Wipeout decided on its own that I wanted to clean not only my barrel, but my rifle’s action and stock and my own hands. (If the cat had been in the room, I'm sure i would have come after it.) I now use a bore guide with a paper towel wrapped around it where it enters the breech. That helps a lot.

After that, I run dry patches down the barrel until they emerge dry, then wet it with Kroil and re-dry.

Just a question , were you useing brass jags on your patches when using the foam...? It will keep turning your patch blue because it's eating on the jag.... I use gunslick foaming bore cleaner and to me it's wonderful.... But you must wash off your jags and brushes with water when done....

I have used boretech and sweets both, they seemed equally as effective and do quite a good job. Boretech no ammonia smell makes life easier for me tho.

No, I know better.. I used a few cans of Wipe out. Not impressed..

I'm trying to break in a barrel and I'm zero luck... it's a copper mine, 1 shot and clean and I'm up to 11 shots and 300 patches and every bore cleaner for copper. Too much Butches or Iosso isn't good either. I found a old bottle of WartHog and three wet patches it was clean, boy do I miss this stuff. ..... jim

Never used Wipeout but have used the other two. I find them, as @ngb1787 stated, equally good but lean toward the Boretec stuff as there is no strong aroma and no danger if left in the bore too long.

I'm not going to get in the discussion about what works the best, whatever works for you is fine with me, BUT I've heard that business about BMG eating up Dewey rods seems like forever and my oldest rods bought back in the 70&80s have tried everything new that came down the road, been hauled all over the USA and for 3 or 4 gallons worth of bmg, until I got good and satisifided that çu2 actually worked I used a lot of bmg with absolutely no problems with the rods. But I always sprayed the brush off and took the bore guide out, sprayed it off and wiped the rod off with brake cleaner before I put the brush rod back in the rack. Then I use my proof rod for the patches and wipe it down with brake cleaner also when I am through. Never had a problem, if you leave a vinyl coated rod wet with the bmg on it, it very possibly would get to it, my 2 cent's worth...

I have been using Montana Extreme copper killer for 20 years with Dewey rods, no problems.

Montana Extreme copper cream is like JB suspended in oil, no stink and easy to use and remove from the barrel.

Sweets preferred for years until I was put onto KG12, wholeheartedly recommended.

Use a bronze brush to apply it and give tube a further light brush to re-expose the copper to it after a few minutes. Swab dry and check near muzzle for any remaining copper and rinse and repeat as necessary.
Faster on copper than Sweets.....and no ammonia stink.

I'm a Bore Tech convert - I used Shooter's Choice for years and it seem to work at least from a group perspective.

The odor however was getting to wifey. I switched to Bore Tech C4, carbon remover, followed by Cu+2, copper remover over a year ago. There's no odor and I'm removing significantly more carbon and copper. Very pleased.

I used various stuff including Sweets till WipeOut came out and used the foam first then non-foam with accelerator.
Then BoreTech came out with C4 for carbon and Cu+2 for copper. Now, both my bore scope and I love the Bore Tech chemicals!

I use Patch out and the Accelorator now but may have to find some Bore Tech and give it a try. I switched to the Sharp Shooter products after trying Wipe Out. In my mind they out perform Shooters Choice and Sweets.

You might want to ditch the foam and go with the liquid, it is easier, quicker, and seems to do better.
Brush it with a good brush to get it everywhere and agitate the bore and simply rinse out the brush in a cup/water bottle

I have used a BUNCH of different bore cleaners and now I only use wipeout or patchout with the accelerator. I used to not shoot near as much as I do now because it was a job to clean the barrels on some guns. Sometimes It would be an all day thing of wet patches then dry to get the copper out. No longer and issue with the wipeout or patchout. I shoot a lot more now just because the cleaning is soooo much easier. I’ve never needed more than 2 soaks with it. Only thing I found close was Bore tech eliminator which worked very well but I noticed that I was getting light rusting in the bore of my guns I cleaned with the Eliminator so I stopped using it. I don’t have a bore scope but my gunsmith does and he now uses patchout himself after scoping some of my barrels for me. And the only brushes I use are nylon and only a few strokes to knock loose any stubborn powder fouling.

I like the Accelerator with the Wipeout, they do a good job for me. Also.....
I clean or soak after every range session . That's what I like about this product, you can leave it sit in the bore and get after it in an hour or three, or the next day. A few passes with a bronze brush and done.
