Bore coating/treatment

Brownells has some stuff called Dyna Tek Bore Coat. Has anyone here used any of this, and what results did you experience with it? It's supposed to be a ceramic based bore coat that is applied to a clean barrel with a loose fitting patch. Then it's fired cured with 8-10 rounds and that's supposed to be the process. They claim it allows the barrel to be cleaned with little more than a damp patch from then on. Just curious if anyone has any experience with it, thanks to all that reply.

I remember that but have no experience with it. Seems to me, that if it worked it would be all the rage and every competition shooter would be using it. Too good to be true? Maybe someone will chime in.

I've been using colloidal graphite since 2006-2007. It aids on bbl. break in, and leaves a coating in the bore for those first couple of shots down the bore at your next outing. I know the stuff works, so I won't try and convince others.

I use lock eeze as well. Makes that first shot not as squeaky. But its not a molecular level ceramic coating, its like the stuff gre-tan is selling

I think that some may need to investigate the definition of a colloid.

Back in the day, when George Kelbly came to a match in Visalia, I had the pleasure of spending some time with him. He showed me the bore (viewed at the muzzle) of his newly chambered barrel that he was shooting in the match without any break in. After that I wrote a story about the products that Greg Tannel now sells, explaining the details. It was published in Shooters News. At the time, Stan Buchtel was selling the two products.

I also got the tip from George. It is one of the few products that have stood the test of time for my shooting disciplines.

Had the pleasure ; and privilege of meeting George last fall when my son and I visited the Kelby facility . He showed me his loading room , and made reference to this info , and told me to look into it for my next new barrel . "Try it out", he said . "You won't be disappointed" . Who am I to argue with George Kelby ? He's probably forgotten more about precision shooting , than I'll ever learn .

any chance you could post a link to that article if you have it, thanks

This is what Greg Tannel recommends:

John Barsness noted gun writer who hangs out at a hunting related blog uses and endorses Dyna Tek with ample discussion in his writing with comments from many users and a variety of experience. So far as I can tell from product labeling and MSDS the Dyna Tek ceramic product has no graphite and no relationship to products with graphite. I may be wrong, there is reference to proprietary information deliberately omitted.
I'd say, but I'm no expert and claim not to be, that allows the barrel to be cleaned with little more than a damp patch from then on is a gross exaggeration. My own practice is to perfume the whole house with Shooter's Choice while leaving the rifle in a cradle and cleaning a little bit at a time over days after using one of the strong copper solvents vigorously. I do have 2 Hawkeye borescopes with high intensity lights - a souped up Mini Maglight will give good intensity but poor color balance - and right angled eyepiece along with a plastic chamber guide for Hawkeye to center in the bore.

What I do believe but won't argue about is there is little benefit from Dyna Tek to a true premium relatively little used barrel that is properly finished. I also believe that a less perfect barrel, say many Savage barrels for example - or anything broached but not lapped - that a barrel that copper fouls in an afternoon of ground squirrels or prairie dog high volume shooting and has to be retired in a favor of another rifle with a clean bore will go more shots before copper fouling to the point of mandatory cleaning. Further the barrel with Dyna Tek will be easier to clean, especially quickly and in the field, after Dyna Tek than before.

I don't much like JB paste for cleaning considering that I do like it for such as hard fitting a 1911 barrel bushing but I do believe in the cleaner the better before apply Dyna Tek. I suggest use Dyna Tek and throw out any left over despite the expense rather than use old product on a new acquisition months down the road.
