Bolt swap Remington 700

I had a extractor break on me today in a Remington 700. I don't have a extra extractor but I do have a extra 700 short action doing nothing. So I grab that bolt and measure bolt face to front of bolt lugs and new bolt is .002 longer. Measuring from back of lug to bolt face there is maybe .001 difference. The bolt shuts no problem and putting empty brass in it closes good also. I'm debating if I should just put a shell in it and shoot it. I don't have a go or no go gauge. I just don't think there is enough difference in bolt to cause a problem. I'm shooting a 22-6MM AI with 50 gr Blitzking.

What do you guys think? Throw a blanket over it and let it buck??

I don't have a go or no go gauge.
Layers of tape applied to head of brass for emergency gauge. Layers of tape to head of bolt to check clearance to barrel tenon.

Caveat: I am a shade tree mechanic.

I have actually made a series of disc shims out of machinist shim stock to use back in the day checking milsurp rifles. A bit of grease will hold them in place on the cart head

I'm wondering why you wouldn't simply replace the extractor. PTG has riveted extractors and rivets for about $25. Rivetless extractors are available on EBay (not cheap) for $50. Scavenging the bolt out of another rifle leaves you with one rifle nonfunctional, the same situation as you are in now.

It's just a action, does not have a barrel on it.

The critical dimension is from the back of the lugs to the bolt face. A little math and you can figure how close to the original bolt the replacement bolt is.
Like I said, the bolt face to the back of lug is like .0015 difference to the original bolt. I just took a depth mic and measured it on my loading bench.

I would just get a new extractor or rent headspace guages or use the extractor out of the bolt you wanna try.

Rivet extractors will not work in a rivetless bolt. Several gunsmiths will change your bolt to a Sako or M16 style extractor. Swapping the bolts will probably work but you need the bolt fixed sooner or later.

PTG has or had rivetless in stock not long ago. I bought some and surprisingly they shipped within about 2 weeks.

Paducah Shooters Supply (KY) is a Remington authorized warranty repair and parts dealer. They have rivetless extractors for considerably less than Ebay and ship immediately, just received a couple. Remington Firearms parts are becoming available for the models they are now producing.
