Bolt lugs welded or handle welded

Rewinder

Can't find a answer. If a second hand PTG "one piece bolt" has no primary extraction, would it be better to tig the bolt handle or the back of the lugs to fill the gap. Bolt will still have to be machined to fit a receiver extraction angle.

Move the handle, you don't want to mess with the lugs. They have to be heat treated and it would change your headspace, boltnose Clearence just to name a few

Bad juju even thinking about tig welding the lugs, that’s a nogo IMO. Welding up the cam on a one piece is going to be a PIA as well. If that bolt never fit or has already been machined and it has no extraction cam left I’d consider removing the existing handle and replacing it with a separate handle. I like Holland’s handles because they have more material in the cam for fitting.

Thanks. The question has to do with needing a Mag. bolt face for a Nesika T action. The original bolt is a coned .473 and the mag.would need to be an .532. It would be a 7/300 wsm and if the extraction is off what would be my options. Thanks, Randy

Just open up the existing bolt. Dont replace it.
Would have been heck of a lot faster to get to a solution if all the info was given up front to start with :)

I'm guessing a cone bolt Nesika has a sliding plate extractor? Shouldn't be too hard to modify the plate or make a new one if so.

I don'get it everyone thinks you have to remove the bolt handle to fix the extraction timing.

My reasoning for that:

If it’s a used PTG one piece and the lugs were previously machined to fit another receiver far enough that it doesn’t have any primary extraction left there’s likely a large gap between the front of the bolt handle and the receiver as well. What do you do with that? Weld it up too? If it has a largish gap and you weld up just the cam there will likely be less cam bearing surface than optimal and less bearing surface than a properly installed handle. If that’s the case I’m still in the camp of replacing the handle. If not then welding up the cam will work. Only way to know for sure is to see what he’s got or better yet have it in hand.

If the bolt handle is one piece with the bolt as in this case just weld up the cam surface on the handle

^^^^^^^^
I can not imagine machining off a one piece bolt handle and replacing it with a brazed on one.

One friend of mine pinned a little roller in the handle base to increase, and ease, primary extraction. It worked really well but I thought it seemed a little fragile. I have seen spacers silver soldered in place to fill in the gap and that appeared to work remarkably well too. I have had to repair a number of mausers on which the bolt handle had been replaced and the extraction surface messed up in the process. The repair consisted of welding up the root of the handle (with oxy-acetylene, early in my career), filing it to fit, then case hardening. This is just basic gunsmith stuff. WH
