Bolt Bushing

Nothing current on the board that I could find so who would you all recommend to bush a Remington 700 bolt? Any idea what the general cost will run me?

Thanks,

Greg

Greg Tannell did two Rem 700's for me both perfect. He is not taking new business currently but I am waiting on him to bush a Rem XP100 bolt for me.

I saw either on this forum or another that i visit, where a guy was bitchen about having his bolt bushed and his rifle didn't shoot any better. He was all in a huff about spending the money and waiting on the bolt to ship both ways and it didn't help at all. I tried to explain that first you need to determine what the problem is and fix that problem, not bush the bolt and wonder why your gun won't shoot BR sized groups. I had one that had ignition problems due to wrong firing pin protrusion, It was fixed when it came home.

I just can't abide the primer flow on this bolt. I certainly don't expect it to cut a quarter inch off my groups. LOL

It looks like a hippie love fest around here for Carlsbad. I guess I do like the Beatles and Love is all I need. I'll be visiting the PO for an outbound package next week.

Thanks guys.

Good call Greg.
Talk to him about turning down the firing pin or replacing with a turned pin. It may or may not help with your bushing, but a good time to consider it.
Best, Jim

Does anyone personally know Greg Tannel?
I do not. I have spoke with him on the phone a couple of times and found out that him and his wife are originally from the Badger State. His wife was from the same town as my son-in-law. He has always been very helpful. I looked for his shop a few years ago when passing through Colorado but somehow must have driven past it. I had some miles to cover, so I just kept on rolling down the highway.

I have a PM in progress. Thanks for the advice. I was going to check on the pin turning. Heck it only costs a few dollars more to go First Cabin.

Having never had a bolt face bushed, do you have too re-check or adjust head spacing ?

I guess if someone really messed up the bushing job you would.

I sent a bolt to Carlsbad that had been "bushed" previously by another smith. The bushing had fallen out, and been repaired by the last guy, and was drilled off center on the repair job. Basically, it was screwed up as bad you could screw up a bolt, and if a job was ever going to significantly change headspace, this would be it.

Carlsbad drilled it out, and used a larger than normal bushing, then re-cut the face. He told me I may want to check headspace on the gun, because the repair was pretty serious relative to most bushing jobs he does.

When I got the bolt back and shot it, headspace had changed by .0005 (half thou).

Can't recommend him enough. Super good guy, great work/prices/turnaround time.

Generally speaking, I think most quality bushings jobs will headspace the exact same.

Jerry will know better than me but I think all Rem 700 bushing jobs get the pin reduced in diameter and the bushing and turning of the pin are long enough to make them a captured firing pin rather than the messed up design that Remington sends to the public.
