Well, I bit the bullet and picked up a Bogen/Manfrotto 3251 tripod, which will support up to 26 pounds, added the leg extensions to be able to keep the geared center column all the way down for more stability, and am mating it to a Bogen 3039 super pro head rated at 26 pounds. The weight of the tripod plus head will be in the 17-18 pound range, add another 6 pounds or so for the scope and we're looking at 24 pounds. Shouldn't blow over that's for sure! LOL! This is one of the most heavy duty combinations that Bogen offers. My goal is to limit wind and other vibrations with my Pentax PF-80EDA scope set at 60 power. I'll report the findings to you all so we all will know if heavy is better. If it isn't I'll put it on E-bay and go back to my Bogen 3221WN with 3047 head.
