Blue Goop?

i have been reading Precision Shooting mags form 1983-5 and this is really interesting. one has a reprint from the ?first benchrest competion in 1948! the format was basically "how do you do this or that". there was a lot of talk of a barrel cleaning chemical called Blue Goop that was instilled into barrels, followed by hydrogen peroxide and out came copper fouling, i think. just curious but don't think i'll try it as they railed about it "eating" bores and leaving pits galore.

Ah yes! Blue Goop! Haven't thought about that stuff for many years. My sinus remembers it well! It was indeed a copper fouling remover. A very strong solution of ammonium hydroxide with a chunk of copper wire dissolved and maybe some other stuff, IIRC. Followed by swabbing with hydrogen peroxide. A research chemist shooting buddy used to make it for us in his lab. Nasty stuff, indeed! Worked well, but would damage barrels if not thoroughly neutralized. Found out quickly that it's not for use in enclosed spaces. Kinda reminded me of my first experience in the Army gas chamber during basic training. With the availability of commercial copper cleaners like Sweet's it quickly fell out of general use. Be thankful that we have a lot more user friendly copper cleaners today. Vic

Not the same stuff I use.

I've been using it for about 5 years now. It's one of the best lubes I've used on bolt lugs and carriers. I use it in my AR also. Doesn't break down from heat at all. I mod it with some other lube to make it a little liquid and use also. I love it

Dang, I am feeling old here. In the early 80's, Blue Goop was the only thing we had! Then Sweet's started importing from Aussie land to Oregon.

We put a penny in some 32% Amonia that we got from the Pharmacy. Swabbed with it, then followed by Hydrogen peroxide....copper gone!

We did a good dousing with lighter fluid to get rid of residue, I never had a problem along with many, many others. Lazy people that half way cleaned their rifles with the stuff had issues...they had issues anyway.

I don't know if you can get 32% Amonia at a pharmacy anymore.

Now, I use Montana Extreme Copper killer, best thing since a mother's love!

Good luck!

Yep. In its day, it was revolutionary! Still have a tube of it in my cleaning box. Nasty stuff but it worked.
