Blow Up

Finally got to the range yesterday to fire my 77/22 17 MK2. Had some older lots of Hornady ,CCI,Remington,Eley and New Hornady.
Decided to start with the CCI 1st on the 7th round care erupted at the rim blowing gasses/powder bac into my face destroying the magazine and lodging the bullet in the Barrel.

This is the 1st time in 60 + years of rimfire shooting Hope it is the LAST

Waiting till Monday to get in touch with CCI

Had a CCI rupture also. CCI said it was contaminated with vapors from chemicals, which is BS because the ammo was stored in a gun sa=fe with the guns. There were no paints chemicals etc near the ammo. CCI won't be much help. They agreed to replace the ammo, but refused responsibility. When I use up my CCI stockpile I will be replacing it with a different brand.

I converted a 10/22 to HM2 and tried the CCI and Hornady ammo. Both were way to hot. I latched on to a good supply of Eley and Remington and haven't had any problems with it. I have this caliber in the Ruger, CZ and Anschutz and I don't shoot more than 50 rounds before a good scrubbing. Don't know the reason but I have found with this round the carbon builds up pretty quick and can cause problems.
I'll add this. The OP's experience is a good reminder to wear shooting or safety glasses.

Some older lots of lapua done the same thing when it got to the 7-10 year old mark. One or two out of a box would blow, not every box in the case, but probably 50% of the boxes a shot would drop low, loose points and blow crap back through the bolt. There were some killer lots some guys tryed saving for bigger matches, but it eventually got to the point it wasn't competive after time. I have over a brick of what was a supreme lot of ammo 11 years ago, I can't use it in a match now because of the droppers. 6-7 shoots and the hole size would barely change, then bang and the 8th drops and inch of two. It's not match ammo anymore.

Had a 17HMR Hornady case do same thing. Pressure actually split my entire forearm of stock from magazine to tip of forearm. Hornady paid for damage and replaced my ammo which was 5 boxes from 2003.

Happened to me also while shooting my 10/22 with Rem Golden Bullets, might be that it could have slam fired too.

My young son of 14 had CCI blow up on him about a year after the 17m2 hit the market. Could not blame it on the CCI because I was not with him to see what else it could have been. I still have a large brick of the CCI 17 that I am afraid to shoot because the ammo is suspect.
