BLACKENING stainless steel?

I have a stainless steel barrel that I think I want to blacken.

Have any of you guys used any of the chemicals offered to blacken 416R stainless?

Any opinions on what works best?

Caldwell (sp) makes a kit that uses a cold formula , two actually, that I tried on m1 garand gas cylinders, neither worked well
I’ve seen some done with brownells oxinate 84 which look good
But honestly sending it out for nitride looks amazing and gives you 55rc hardness

Duracoat. Ive seen some bad luck with nitride on S.S. barrels, C.M has done good.

I have also been looking at the Duracoat. I might consider that as a better option.

I've duracoated 3 or 4 barrels it has held up well. Prep is the key just like alot of things.

Automotive header paint works very well also,(VHT?) Fairly durable and holds up well.

A guy posted a thread a month ago about using Presto Black. He loved it so much I bought a bottle to try. I haven’t had the time to try it yet but it looked easy to use from his post. Do a search for it.

Caswell is good to deal with, but I haven't used their stainless product.

I recently did a SS bbl. using Presto black. I'd say it looks OK, but not fabulous. i may try and redo it when time permits.
