Black Marine Tex

Thanks for the reply.
Im about to bed my first on my own. I have seen it done 3 or 4 times about 10 years ago. The stock I'm bedding is black and just didn't want a white or gray color down the side of the action showing up. Black would be great.

At worst it's a very dark gray. You have to look hard to notice the color difference. I clean up the excess with vinegar when it starts to set-up. I believe the vinegar may cause it to tint lighter resulting in the dark gray.

Brownells sells black dye for epoxies. Black as the black hole at midnight. By the tub, or in little individual packets. A little goes a long way. Don't get any on you...

A little bit of powdered graphite will do the job. You don't need much. I've even made bearings from a mixture of epoxy and graphite.

You can order color pigments for use in glass resin or epoxy. I bought mine from a marine fiberglass wholesaler. A little dab will do you.

Shoot me a PM with your address. I'll send ya a little bit of black epoxy pigment. A little goes a long ways with this stuff.

A little related word of warning with using MarineTex. It sets very hard and you'll be surprised what it takes to break thin edges off.

The warning relates to sharpness of dags. I was backfilling a stock for reinletting and used masking tape to contain it. While working on the next edge, the stock slid somewhat in the jaws of a woodworking vice and started to fall. I grabbed it as it started to fall but managed to catch the unmasked edge of the set bit and sliced a -deep- cut into one finger. Bled like a stuck pig. I'd suggest soften any such edges before you move on to the detailed work. Will avoid getting bitten by a razor sharp edge..

No worries Anthony, I work in the plastics industry and also with epoxies/GRP, let me know if you have any technical questions regarding the materials. Bedding, I'm not a seasoned professional like many are here, but I know the materials inside and out. I'm currently working on modifying Devcon product that will have lower shrinkage and higher compressive strength that the 101, hope it works as I want it too.
