I have set aside about 3000usd from my rifle scope etc so please do feel free to give me some advise. stone throwing is not say'd in a bad way I love my old mk4 no1 but it is time for a change

This article might be a good place to start:

Have fun!

Have you visited the Great Britian Fclass website? there is a great deal of information on it. They also have a forum with a buy and sell classified.

boer..........I shot with the South African F Class Team last Summer at the Canadian Championships. They were there specifically for the U.S. Match at the end of the Meet but they shot the whole 10 day Prize Meet. Great bunch of guys.

They all shot 6.5-284s. This cartridge is falling out of favour a bit because it is hard on barrels. Don`t know what access you have to brass and bullets. Maybe the easiest route is the good ol` 6.5x55 Swede. Lapua brass and bullets are excellent.

The Tikka T3 Varmint and Super Varmint are available in left hand versions for the 6.5x55 in F(O) or .308 for F/TR.

Good luck in your quest.

Boer,

Go For a 7mm for shure a strait 284 or shahane with a 32 inch barrel.

Stock and actions are your choice, there are loads to look at.GB Fclass stocks from Robertsons are very good.

You will be lucky to find a used set up for sale, for a left Hooker so good luck with that one.

There is a real Bargin on the GB F Class web page (for sale6mm swiss match) at the moment have a look there , Right hander i know but with a stock that you will be able to use as a leftie.
You can get a new barrel put on job done.

Scopes well this is were you may blow the budget a bit Nightforce NF range are well used in these comps 8x32 12x42 will be the best for this type of compation.

Good luck and have fun

Try this..
30" barrel, 1 in 12 twist
155.5 or 185 grain Bergers LRBT about 30 thou off the lands
Nightforce NXS 12-42x56, or Sightron SIII 10-50x60
N-150 powder
308win Lapua brass
stock of choice
bipod of choice

I have been very impressed by the F-T/R Savages I have seen at F-Class matches in the US. Not sure if they are available or what other components might be available in South Africa, but I did read about custom rifles built many years ago on Enfield actions. Might have been in one of the PO Ackley books but certain models of Enfields were said to be very strong, others not so.

Boer,

as well as endorsing the advice given on looking at the GB F-Class Association website (and look specifically at the F/TR section which is what you'd be shooting in with a .308W)

http://www.freewebs.com/fclassuk/ftronly.htm

I'd suggest you speak to Stuart Anselm of Osprey Rifles in Oldham Gtr Manchester

http://www.ospreyrifles.com/

Stuart is the GB F/TR team captain, a very successful F/TR shooter in his own right and has built many successful rifles in this category at reasonable prices. Stuart mostly uses the Savage PT single-shot target action.

Another northern F/TR rifle supplier mostly using New Zealand Barnard actions is Brian Fox in Stockport, Gtr Manchester who has a part-time shop on Diggle Ranges.

http://www.foxfirearmsuk.com/

Both supply specialist lightweight wide-angle bi-pods too for F/TR class shooting. Between them they account for the majority of recent UK F/TR rifle new build.

As you're obviously close to Bisley given the original post, there is a GB-FCA training weekend taking place next weekend 19-20th Feb. Contact Mik Maksimovich, the associations' chairman (Mik also builds F-Class rifles being one of the two guys behind Dolphin Arms), re having a chance to watch and talk to some of the F/TR shooters in one of the on-range sessions. Stuart Anselm may well be there too.

Finally, if you haven't found it already you ought to be reading the UK's free online target shooting magazine

http://www.targetshooter.co.uk/

which has had several features on F/TR rifles (including two of mine) as well as F-Class (Open that is) rifle builds. It has a monthly F-Class report ("The Long View") on GB-FCA rounds and matters. Old issues are available as PDF files in the Archive section.

Don't be put off by all the mention of national rounds and the national body if you plan to compete at club level only. These people will help you with advice on getting up and started at any level. Association membership is cheap (£15) if you want to join, and if you have good access to Bisley, there are two national rounds held there this year, the Long-Range meeting (1,000-1,200yd) on 2nd/3rd July and the F-Class European Championship meeting (4th-6th November, the third day for team shoots only).

Hello boer,
may we know each other from the f-class league shoots.
Due to the range conditions in bisley, hills, up and downwinds which you can´t see, the only choice is a 7mm. In addition to the other fellow shooters and gunmakers named by laurie you may ask mik on www.dolphinguncompany.co.uk.

The 6,5-284 N is not able to handle the wind conditions like a 7mm does. I use now a 7mm Rem SAUM, less powder than a WSM, longer barrell life i.e. A 6,5 could be good on flat ranges like raton i.e. My details are neck 7,97mm, Brass Remington 7,92mm, Broughton barrel c5 - twist 1:9 - 32" - Anschütz Trigger - Sigg&Schurter System -
Powder N 560 - best groups 60,5gr - Berger 180gr VLD - 920m/s.

May your shoots all be V´s

cheers

michael meyer ;)
