bipods

hey have any of you had a problem with getting a bipod on straight? mine is just a cheapo from walmart and it went on reall easy but i look through my scope with the legs down and my scope is no longer straight. could it have been cockeyed to begin with?

Break down and get yourself a set of Harris Bipods,9-13 inch swivel type) and add on a PodLoc and you won't have any problems shooting with your scope on a bipod. On the bench, I put a couple of sandbags on the sides of the feet to help with recoil on my .223. For the rear, I use a leather sandbag filled with dry sand that I squeeze to get the right height,it was almost comedic watching me try to put wet sand in my first one).

Before reading this forum, I used to think that using a Bipod was cheating -- now I realize that it is a bit primitive against some of these guys and their '100-pounder' rests.

I want to keep some skill in the shooting...says this old Marine.

The only way to know if the scope is on straight, i.e. plumb like you would measure with a level or plumb bob, is to put your rifle in a rest/cradle/vise and then compare the reticle's vertical crosshair to a line known to be straight up and down,e.g. a plumb bob, which is just a weight hanging on a string.

So, could your scope be on somewhat cockeyed? Yes.

However, your bipod could also be the culprit, if the legs aren't the same height, or aren't at the same angle on both sides. Lots of us like and use the 'swivel',more like tilt-able) bipods from Harris, which by the way have an 'S' designation. This left and right tilting feature lets you compensate for an uneven shooting position on the ground or a slanted benchtop. It's very handy.

Otherwise, if your bipod legs are adjustable, you can try to even them out, but that's a hassle after a while, so the tilt feature is pretty much what many of us end up using. :)

jraney: All bets are off with a 'cheapo from WalMart'. Not knowing any better, and trying to save a few bucks, I bought a 'bi-pod' made-in-China-- what a piece of sh--! it was returned to Midway for a full refund. Bought the superior Harris and never looked back. Yet another example of 'you get what you pay for'.Kind of like the $50 rifle scopes out there: absolute trash!

I got the really long Harris that does not swivel on the end of a long military stock.

I had a hard time getting it on straight.

The first time I tried to use it hunting, it broke the stock.

Harris is the way to go. Not that walmart chinese junk. I have been using mine hard over two decades no problems with either. I prefer the one with the smaller feet, you can dig them in easier if you are shooting them off unlevel ground. Don't leave home without one. Hetzer

I would have to agree with NateHaler. #1 You need a swivel base bi pod,Podloc tension lever helps but not necessary) when shooting on uneven areas. #2 Make sure the scope cross hairs are parallel to the bore axis. #3 Make sure that you mount your cheek to stock in the same manner as when you set the cross hairs when you initially mounted the scope, you maybe canting your head in a different position when using the bi pod). I got both bipods,Shooters Ridge & Harris). I use the Harris and my son gets to use the Shooters Ridge.;)

Harris 6-9in BR S model has swivel. Shop around. I see them for $85-$125 US.

I just picked one up. Now if the snow will kindly depart.
