Big Boomers--Check It Out

Forum Boss

Guys, folks have been asking for a story on the "Loudenboomers", aka the 1K Heavy Guns.

Sorry it arrived a little late, but I put up a BIG story with lots of pix. I did about 8 hours of interviews and I have a lot of material I may fill in later relating to Heavy Gun shooting technique. Thanks to Bruce Baer, Steve Shelp,of Hawk's Ridge), Dave Tooley and George Tompkins--all great shooters and super nice, helpful souls.

Bruce provided some real nice pictures and I think the article does a decent job covering the serious hardware these Boomer pilots use in matches:

Paul,

What a great article on the 1000 yard heavy guns..
Had this article been in print before my first BR match
I would not have shown up to shoot. My first BR match ever
was the 2002 NBRSA 1000 yard nationals, and I saw the heavy
guns one day before the match. WOW are they impressive!

Jerry,

Impressive they are indeed. But, for those of you who may not be aware, Jerry managed to whip most of those Big Boomers pretty handily at the 2005 NBRSA Nationals. When all is said and done the most important piece of equipment is still the man,or woman) who pulls the trigger, and reads the wind).

Glad you liked the article Jerry. Looks like there may be a few more converts to the 7mm camp soon. I'd like to get you and Shehane in a 1K shoot-off some time, shooting for pink slips,He's building a 7mm by the way).

Hey Jerry,
Did you see Bruce Baer's comments? I agree with 'em - more time needed between shots, and making wind reading a more important part of the game.

Bruce and Gerry Baer have been personnel friends of Carolyn and I for many years. As nice a guy as you would ever want to meet. Bruce is a dedicated 1000 yard gunsmith and competitor, so dedicated in fact that some years ago they moved home and business to it's new location so he could have his own range!
Bruce dosen't have to go far to test the rifles he builds, heck in fact he dosen't even have to leave the shop!

The article didn't mention that Gerry builds most of his light gun laminated stocks in whatever color you might want, and still finds time to bake some of the best pies I've ever tasted.

Bruce has always been at the fore front of 1000 yard thinking. He generally dosen't comment until he's given a subject a lot of thought, so it pays to listen when he does decide to speak out. The three governing organizations would do well to put aside their differences and listen if they truly want to promote growth.

Editor in Chief,
Nice article, lots of good pictures. Tell me who makes that rest you got pictured?
Thanks,
The new guy

I am changing a 223 Savage action to a 7WSM with a 1.25" Krieger, 30 inches long ). Elmer Laitala has agreed to install the barreled action in one of his Alum. blocks and put it in a hv. Richards lam. stock. I want this gun for Hv. class IBS 1,000 yd. and to get into the 2,000 yd. VHA club. I shoot prairie dogs the same way I shoot IBS 1,000 yd. - zero in on your sighters then get off your target shots as fast as you can before the conditions change. At 1,000yds. and over I could not begin to dope out all the possible changing conditions. There might be some pickers out there, but all the contests I have gone to everyone is usually done shooting in the first min. of the score period. I like the IBS system the way it is. :D Good shooting, Gerry Nordmann :thumb:

Gerry,
I would agree, speed is the equalizer. But I would like to see the rules the same for all, but it will never happen.

Yes by all means, I would be interested myself. But thats OK... its a common misconception. And also the aluminum heavy gun stock pictured with George or Dee Thomkins, I cant remember and cant find the article this morning to save myself )is not mine. That stock was built by Kenny Riedenour.,sorry Kenny I probably misspelled your name) But,George and Dee do have and shoot 2 of the stocks that I build. More like this..
