Biathlon

Machinist, Designer, and Shooter.
Any biathlon shooters here? I have been watching our team on the olympics. So far very disappointed to see that our great nation that has so many shooting enthusiast has never even place in this event. :-[

There rifles look pretty cool too.

Note the weight on the barrel. Tuner?

There is a biathlon course in West Yellowstone, MT, and the Montana National Guard was going to build another one near Helena, MT until the environmentalists sued to stop it.

That Weight/Tuner is actually a "BLOOP Tube Adapter" to move the sight radius fwd/into focus.

The marksmanship skills in biathlon are the easily taught skills -XC skiing is where the European's/Scandinavian's shine.

The Anschutz 1827 Fortner's are the rifle of choice for biathlon.

Keep in mind that shooting skills are only a part of the biathlon competition and holding the X ring on a
1 3/4 inch target (prone) at approx. 50 yards then, later, a 4 1/2 inch target standing at the same distance with your heart pounding and lungs aching is no small feat. Even if you ace the two five shot strings you've gotta be a pretty darn good cross country skier to even finish in a respectable amount of time.
There we forty entries in the men’s individual biathlon in Sochi. We had one man in the competition; he finished 8th; a mere 1 minute 25.1 seconds behind the first finisher, and his shooting score (with one penalty) was no worse than the gold medal winner - who is seven years his junior. If I finish in the top ten of any match where there are thirty nine other shooters I figure it's been a good day and, under better circumstances, I just might have been in the top five.

Go Bjorndalen (sp).. If the US could consistantly get a medal in XC skiing then and only then could they hope to look at biathlon. It's probably the most difficult sport in the winter games IMHO. But it's good to see the US field a team and do as well as they have against the Scandinavian countries.

The tree hugers are destroying this country.

"I would love to see that sport in the USA,but have you ever seen a place where you can ski and shoot?"

My farm - but first I would have to learn how to ski!

Sports are a numbers game. You need massive numbers and multiple levels of competitive distillation to make world class athletes.

Unlike the Scandinavian countries, x-country skiing is not part of our culture, nor does most of our country have enough snow to support it.

Low numbers, low medals.

I'm not having any luck finding the rules governing rifle configuration. Any clues?

Seems like a semi-auto would be just the ticket.

Biathlon is a LOT more about skiing fast than it is about shooting. Many biathlon shooters are world class ski racers who were just not quite good enough to make their XC ski teams... you can teach a world class skier to shoot, you can't turn a couch potato shooter into a world class skier. Other countries (especially the Scandinavian countries turn out many world class skiers... some of them become good shooters and can win the biathlon.

Also interesting...

I think it's interesting to see this sport in Russia, considering that the skills involved are exactly the ones used so effectively by the Finns against the USSR back in 'the winter of 1939-40.

Biathlon is my favorite event at the Winter Olympics.
As everyone has already said. It's a very tough to do, and really tough to do well.
They do a summer version here in WA. State where the competitors run and shoot. Still pretty tough to do.

Not that I know a dang thing about the activity, but doesn't it seem that the rifles are a bit over done for what they have to accomplish in markmanship?
