Best way to clean your brass-inside and out

Am I going to invest in a tumbler and some stainless cleaning media on the off chance that it might gain me some accuracy? No, because I have no reason to believe that it will, and the equipment is not cheap.

On the other hand, if someone furnishes definitive proof that my thin necked (.0086) 6PPC cases will produce smaller groups after something different is done to them, that would be a different matter.

The newly minted Benchrest Hall of Fame inductee Jack Neary seems to think that turning 6PPC necks down to .0081"-.0082" for a .262" neck chamber and trimming to 1.490" produces smaller groups.

Read more on his testing in the James Mock article in the December 2010 edition of PRECISION SHOOTING.

You might rethink the .0086" dimension and do some testing yourself. I know I am.

Absolutely....I need to get busy and make some test brass, and Jack i not the only top shooter that I have heard of that is running more clearance.

For those that shoot disciplines that involve loading at the range, between matches, there is really no choice, there is no time to wet tumble between matches and chucking up a brush and spinning the inside of the necks clean will definitely change seating feel. For me in this situation it is not about how neat a person is, it is about not letting looks get in the way of what works best. I run a bronze brush in and out of the necks rapidly 2-3 times, clean the powder fouling off the outside with 0000, and clean the primer pockets with an old Sinclair cutter, set to touch but not cut. Seating force feels fairly uniform. I also shoot and load a set of cases (around 25) in strict rotation, or as nearly as I can manage. Sometimes, if I am feeling different seating forces within a set, I will segregate the loaded rounds into as many as three groups, that will be used on separate targets.

Boyd, that's about the same process I've been doing. The only difference is that I don't clean the primer pockets. Have you ever tried skipping that step? Give it a shot... you may notice no difference in group size. I didn't. (I'm shooting 1K BR).

With that said, I've been seriously considering an ultrasonic cleaner. Why? I don't know. I think it would get rid of that little question mark in the back of my mind about how my ammo will perform. This game is mostly mental... remove all the physical/mechanical variables, then blame yourself for all the missed x's. I think that's what I'm trying to do now...
