Best Varmint round

Guys,

I am looking to add a barrel to my Bat B action 308 boltface gun. It is a 6BRX 14TW now. I want to add something with more range, but want to keep it in a short action case. What do you use?

Mark, what are the Varmits are you planning on shooting? As you know, there are alot of fine cartridges that can be accomodated by the .473" boltface. What is the intended primary use and approx range?

savageboy,

Groundhogs are the primary target. I have 6BR, 6BRX, 223, and 204 ruger, thet cover out to 750yds. This gun is a bench or truck gun 17lbs. I was looking for something to go out to 1000yds for GH and longer ranges for PD. It may be a long range deer and varmint round also, when it would be a 284 win or a 308 win.

For varmints I like to keep bullets to Amax or varmint class bullets.

I guess I have got the varmint rounds down to larger 20, 22, and 6mm. I have had 6mmAI, fast tw 22-250AI, and 20 BR.

Mark,
To me it sounds like you pretty much have it covered- 22-250AI, 6mmAI. I don't really think that you'd get much more out at that range out of a 6-284 or a 22-243 Middlested, etc.
Sounds like the .284/ 7mm fast twist shooting 162's / 180's is the only "hole" if you can call it that in your arsenal!

gunamonth,

I had a 6mmAI 1o tw and shot the 87vmax, but Barrel life is short. Yes the brass is not that good. I am looking at the 243AI for the good lapua brass. The 6x284 is good too. I guess barrel life will be the cost for what I want in a gun. I will want to go with a twist that will shoot the 105 Amax for the extra long range.

savageboy,

I have been looking hard at a 284 win. It has been doing well at Fclass and 1000 yds BR matches.

Mark,

beg, borrow or steal a copy of "A Varmint Hunter's Odyssey" by Steve Hanson (Precision Shooting 1999) if you haven't already found this book.

Chapters 10 and 11 cover Extra-Long range Shooting (600 to 800-900 yards) and Ultra-Long Range Shooting (850 yards and beyond).

Although 10 years old, the advice and notes on effective cartridges are still mostly relevant going up from 6.5-06 Improved and 6.5-284 to wildcats like the .338/416 that the author used to make 1,000 + yard rockchuck kills.

Sounds like a 338 Lapua may be just the ticket. 17 pound rifle, good brake on it, it should be quite manageable!

Hey Mark! I wouldn't turn my nose up at the 300 WSM for a 1000 yd. varmint rig. You would have to change your bolt face to accomodate the bigger case head but, these are some awesome shooting rigs. Look on Richard Franklins website about his 300 WSM varmint rigs. Hes burning a 125 gr. bullet out there at over 4,000 fps muzzle velocity. His rig is built on a BAT action also. Check it out!

How about the 6 x 47 Swiss match, though I'm not sure of the base size on that one.

Thane

Thane,
6SM and 6XC are similar designs and have virtually identical identical performance, although probably don't share any history - both have the 0.473" case-head diameter.

The benefit of the 6SM was very good RWS brass, if expensive and hard to get, but you can get good Norma 6XC brass now and Lapua is introducing its own .22-250 Rem brass in a few weeks time, and that can be re-formed to 6XC.

Mark, I prefer the 12 twist over the 14. Stabilizes the 70 NOS BT better for extended range.
For your long range I would go with the BRX you have and get a 7 twist and shoot the 115's. I have not had a prarie dog crawl off with them. This twist will also shoot the 105 V-max, 105 Berger, and 107 SMK' fine. The extra twist will keep them stabilized at extended range past 1,000 when they really slow down and approach sub-sonic.
Hope you make it to S. D. this summer!
