Best Scope for Small Varmint hunting from a bench

Looking for some opinions on a good scope for small varmints off a bench.........go!

I am a die hard Vortex hater, but the new Razor LHT has been great for me. I tried it just to say I had tried it, and I’m not selling it.

I find 20x to be somewhat limiting. Getting a clear picture of a rodent at 500 really is easier with a scope more in the 25x max power range.

I think pacificman has this nailed with his recommendation of a Sightron S-Tac 5-20 scope. Just a few days ago I saw that they were still on sale at Camera Land for $300.00 which I think is a steal. I have 3 of them with the MOA-2 reticle and really can't fault them in any way. Sometimes a little more power would be nice but for the price I have found them very easy to live with.

I have 4 sightron s-tac scopes and like them. Thats why i have 4. Also have had good luck with vortex, i have 3 different modles. Nikon was also good but they are now gone

Do you have a budget?

300-400 sightron S tac

400-700 MeoptaOptika 6, older used Leupold in the 6-24x range or 4-12x if that’s enough magnification for you.

700-1000 range. It’s hard to beat the sale that EuroOptics has on Trijicon SFP scopes. I just bought one of the 3-18x ten miles, it arrived today and is a lot of glass for the 719.99, street piece is a lot more than that and they have a few models on sale that would be great for varminting off a bench 600-1100.00, link at the bottom of the page.

Over 1k, Leupold Mark 5 is one of my favorites, love the glass and the turrets and the 3-18x is probably one of the smallest scopes in the class. There’s a slew of scopes over the 1k mark, so many good choices.

Sightron...I bought a couple of Sightron S-Tac 4x20x50 for varmint hunting.
Very good value for the money! To me they are just about comparable to my
Sightron 3's
Can you give me some intel on Sightron scopes? Everyone asks is it a ii iii, what is significance? Also big sky? I have heard great things about them, but I don't have any general understanding of the line. thanks in advance.

Depends on how elaborate the dollar value on a scope brand you want but I recommend one with a multi-stadia reticle like the H25 or H59 types. Its great for fast follow up shots (dependant on visible shot impacts and bullet trace). Sometimes needed for those little fast-movers. Some get freaked out by the reticle but its a short-learned visual adjustment. Been using this type of reticle pattern in the field since its inception. A tip of the hat to Todd Hodnett.

Seems the Sightron 3's have better glass and are more near their higher end line of scopes. All I can say about the S-Tac is that to me the glass and turret function is comparable to my 1000.00 dollar Sightron 3 scopes for less money. I have not been disappointed and would purchase another if needed. I don't know anything about the "big sky" scopes as I don't have one to compare.

There’s a used Trijicon 5-20x50 accupoint on the classified right, 650.00 is a great price on that scope.

I just ordered another Stac from Lancexxx here a while back, think I have 3 maybe 4 now. As mentioned some very good glass for the $$.

I bought an Arken 5-25 along with a buddy. We played with it on a prairie dog hunt earlier this month. For the money I wasn’t disappointed at all. Clicks and hold overs worked the same out to 700ish. I was happy enough I ordered a 6-24 to play with also.

What are the distances you expect to shoot? I use 10X on my 17HMR, 12X on my 17 Hornady Hornet, 12X on a 222, all fixed power. I have variables on a a 204 Ruger and 25-06, I don't shoot these very much due to component availability. I seldom find myself "under scoped", shooting gophers. The 'reach out there' guns have more scope. I don't like the variables because of the eye relief change. When at the range ask to "take a peek" thru others scopes, and don't be afraid to buy a used scope on this site, I've bought and sold some and didn't lose much money. But buy quality, the best you can afford, it WILL make a difference at the end of the day or when you want to sell.
