Best projectile for a 300 win mag

I recently purchased a 300 win mag for tactical competition and i would like to know from guys who shoot this round what weight and brand projectile they shoot and their load if i wish to share. I know the 190SMK's are popular and can be shot at 2900fps. i have a 1:10 twist barrel. I will be shooting between 500-1000yds. Does lapua sell a good projectile for it? scenars go well from what ive heard. The main reason i use the 300 win is because of its ability to buck wind and the 6.5x47 wasnt out.....

Also where is the best place to get projectiles bulk who will send overseas. I live in Australia mate haha

Thanks in advance

i am shooting 240 sierras with retumbo powder out of a 30" 9" twist Hart. i have pushed them up to 2900 fps but right now i am shooting them at 2730 fps with superb accuracy. that twist likes that velocity better. what length barrel is on your rifle? if you have a 28-30 inch tube, your 10" twist may stabalize the 240s if you push them fast enough.

I have a 26 inch barrel as it is a tactical rig (has to have high handling ability). I will be mainly shooting at 500yds but occasionally out to 1k. i think 190-210gr is about max for a 1:10 26 incher dont you think? and yeah bergers, SMK's and hornady are what i was thinking

As i said i want accuracy and the ability to punch hard through the wind...

Thanks guys

No, Cole is correct. A 10" twist will stabilize a Sierra 240 at higher velocities in moderate to warm weather. The 220 and 240 are old school Sierra designs, are relatively short for their weight and easy to stabilize.

I think il go with the 208 hornady A-Max they seem consistant from what ive read and with a BC or .648 or thereabouts it will be ideal for long range tactical comp. I didnt realise a 1:10 would stabilize up to 240 grainers thats good to know. Although I think i would need a 30inch barrel to shoot them fast enough for it to have an advantage in wind drift and bullet drop over the 208's

I shoot 190 SMKs in Lupua brass with 82.5 grains of H-1000 at 3180 at muzzle. Shoots excellent out to 1000 yards.

I happen to have some 173gr pull downs laying around and decided to try my hand at loading for 300winmag one day. The rifle is a Winchester "Custom Classic Sharpshooter", 26" 1x10 heavy barrel. 69gr IMR4831,Fed 215,WW Super brass. They chrono @2860 and are surprisingly accurate all the way out to 1000.Very mild recoil to. So I guess I'm saying if you come across the lighter weight bullets give them a try.

The old 173s can be very accurate. The problem is that they can also be quite variable. I shot lots of Lake City Match that were nearly as good as the best handloads (ca. 1985) and other lots that had trouble staying on a 600 yard target.

I just finished a barrel block, bench style rifle to shoot 600 to 1,000 yds in the wind. I chose 300 Win Mag because I had most of the pieces on hand, and hoping to see my bullet holes at 600, which was almost impossible with the 6mm I had been using. I found Hornady 208 gr. A Max's, pushed by 76 Gr of H1000, gave me 2900 fps from a 30" Broughton 5C 1/10 barrel. The first 3 shots went in the same hole at 100, groups were 3" to 4" at 600. I guessed at this load, no time for a workup, now no extra bullets to waste. The B.C. of the Hornady 208 equals the SMK 240 and can be driven faster in a slower twist barrel, easy choice.

With the 208 Amax or the 210 Berger VLD my POI is the same w/ 75.5 gr H-1000. I neck size with a Lee Collet die and bump the shoulder back with a Redding body die when I need to. I seat the bullets to the lands with a Redding Comp seater. Annealed R-P brass and Fed 215M primers. My Savage bedded and trued w/factory tube shoots 1/2 MOA with these loads. I have a Lupie Mark IV 4.5 X 14 X 40 that I love for optics. I don't like the big objectives it messes with my cheek weld. Thanks and Good Luck

Thanks fellas for the knowledge i got a couple of boxes of 208's and have loaded them up at 71.5gns AR2213SC (australian powder) in once fired federal factory brass and winchester magnum primers. Im hoping for something around 2800fps so they shoot real nice out yonder. Any comments on this load are welcomed. I cant wait to wack a few down the range in the next few weeks.

Cheers

QuickLOAD shows about 55.8ksi at 95% fill. Barring any issues of tight barrel, etc., that should be a good load and produce around 2850 fps. I usually start around 50ksi because I have been surprised a few times but it should be OK.

Lapua does not but Norma does. For the money, Winchester brass is very good. It requires more work than either Norma or Lapua but my experience is that it is tougher than Norma, almost as durable as Lapua.
