best primers to try & some basic data advice (newbie 6br loader:-P)

Hi

ive got most of my gear together to laod for 6br & was wondering on wht u guys recomend primer wise!

ive jsut set a dumy round for the smith to work off of with a 105g Aamx @ 2.27" wich looks good with the bearing surface finishing just above the neck shoulder junction!

tube will be a 1-8 pacnor @26-27"

im hoping it will shoot lighter bullets to with a 65g vmax being my favorite bullet in my 243ai for foxing!(altho at the same seating die setting its hanging out fair!)

i have vit140 & 150 & h414 to hand with my local shop stocking most of the vit range!

wht primer powder combanations would work for the 65g vmax & 105Amax o get me up & running!

ive looked on vits site & the velocity fiqs seem miles differnt to wht i see mentioned on here!!

some start loads would go down very well to if anyones got experiance of my combiantions:-)

many thanks in advance!

Andy

Andy,

Go back to the home page on this site and look at the column of topics on the left. You will see 6br info. click on that and you will get a lot of load data including bullets, powder, primers and expected velocities.

Hi Jim
Have seen the loads listed but only 1-2 that match my bullets/ powders available!

are cc450(mags suitable with vit powders ect)

hoping for some actual users data idealy!

cheers Andy

If you plan to go for higher velocities and pressure you may want to stick to the primers that are thicker. The CCI 450 and BR4's are common choices. See this article:

http://www.jamescalhoon.com/primers_and_pressure.php

Varget seems to be one of the most popular choices of powder. I've tried it and H322. Varget especially in the heavier bullets gives better velocity as it is a slower powder.

Andy, there is a reason your bullet/powder combo is not shown.

I suggest you get either Sierra 107 MK or 105 Berger BT and some VARGET. Seat the bullets .010" off and feul with 30 grains of VARGET. Also, I am very pleae with the Wolf RR Magnum primers with Lapua cases.

i have switched over completely to wolf primers. i was shooting all cci br-4s in my small rifles and winchester in everything else, and then i started to hear about the wolf brand. at first, i turned my nose to them. then i read many articles and saw what some of the top shooters were using and i have never looked back. i have never been able to get the consistency with the other brands of primers like i do with the wolf. i just the American factories could get it together like wolf has and make a nice consistent primer.

I load for a 6BR as well and with the Wolf Small Rifle Magnum, Outstanding accuracy, standard deviation and extreme spread, but when I use these same primers in my .223 the SD and ES were not anywhere as good as the Rem 7 1/2's........

Why is life so Confusing?????

I would suggest N-135 for the 65's and N-140 for the heavies.

As a short range shooter I've found Fed 205M give me the best accuracy usually. ES really don't meen much out to 200yds and perhaps 300 especially using light match bullets.
My last batch of Feds craters quite a bit. Does'nt seem to hurt they don't pop so be it.

Rem 7.5's seem to work well with Benchmark to me. Beyond that I have little use for them.

I'm sure if I wanted to shoot longer yardages my tune would change. No pun intended.

cheers for the advice guys:-)

im not bothered about the other heavys as much as the Amax as its day job will long range varminter so smk's ect wont be the bullet of choice!

so ccimags & br4's have thicker cups & the reason i see a lot of you guys listing then on your loads!

varget is in short suplie at the moment in the uk so not my best option!

ive always had best results with vit powders in anything ive laoded for to date!

No prob andy. Even on this side of the pond I prefer Viht over Varget ;) ;D
105 A-Max eeehhhh not so much. Try anywhere from .010" to .020 off the lands for best results. My bet is on .012" off

My 308 loves 155g amax & my old 22-250 loved the 52's

if my 6br shoots anywhere near as good as my 308 ill be proper chuffed:-)

Andy,
Just saw your post from a few days ago. So I thought I'd throw in my two cents worth since my 6mmbr Savage Model 12 BR has the same barrel twist as your pacnor barrel (even though my barrel is 29"). I use strictly Bart's 68 gr bullets being pushed by 29 grs of VV N133. My primers are Federal Match SR. I've had great success and consistency with that combo. Info for your consideration.
