Best Powder for the Heavies in 243 Win

the most impressive powder I tested was R16. I was going to use it exclusively until, as anticipated it DISAPPEARED from the shelves.

So, I bought 16 lbs of Vit N160 and I am going to use that. Works for Whidden!!!

John is a gunsmith(very good),he can change barrel often!I really believe that his load is outstanding at 1000 yds
but it's probably a barrel burner. The name of this game is winning and John do that very well!

Apparently, you do not have to shoot that 45 grain node. The 42.5 node is very accurate and doesn't kill the barrels.

3150 will not be a problem with the N-160. I get that really easy with the H-1000 and N-165 but at lower pressures to boot. Good luck!

Thanks, I had him up to 3300fps with the previous powder but unfortunately replacing barrels over here is harder/longer process than buying a house so also trying to "save" the barrel a little by not hammering it to hard. Would love to try some H1000 but its not available here.

Since i see you have access to N-160, any access to N-165 since? I like it better actually than the H-1000 but it's cost prohibitive here.

There was one 1 1lb container of N165 so went with the N160 so I could at least get through the season with 1 lot#. The VV powders cost about 3 times what our local powder costs and a little more than hodgdon but the availability isn't always guaranteed, we have only had access to these powders for maybe a year so the limited mounts that do come in fly off the shelves even with the crazy prices…I paid around $65 per lb of N160 and it looks like the newer prices are round $75 but what can you do.

Thanks for the tip on N165 ill give it a run as well

Joe Hendricks has shot the .243 and the 6mm Competition Match with H1000 and VV N165 with excellent accuracy. He was using the 115 DTAC back then. His load information is somewhere on here.

Even with N160 and Moly a Hot Rod .243 at 3250+ fps......barrels last 1300-1500 rounds. If you don't "need" that kind of velocity......stick with another caliber.

For 3000 fps.......6BRAI, DASHER, BRX, ETC.

For 3150 fps.......SLR, 6X47, ETC.

On Saturday John told me in the teens. Well that covers 13-19... I looked at him with a concerned look, he promptly said 1300-1400.
