Best Powder 6.5-.284 Win

Hello everyone and thank you for allowing me to join the forum.

I know this has been brought up before, but usually the talk is centered around rifles with longer barrels and heavier bullets. Looking for a powder to obtain max velocity with the 130 gr Swift Scirocco. Rifle was built approx 20+ years ago and is chambered for 6.5-284 Win on a Sako L579 action and 22" Douglas Premium barrel, will accept OAL 2.95". This will be a hunting load so barrel wear should not be an issue, Hunting will be done in approx 35 degree temps. Some of the powders I have seen mentioned are Reloader 17, Reloader 23, Reloader 26, VV560. It would be great to get a powder that reduces copper fouling along with temp stability , but not at the cost of giving up any appreciable velocity. Any idea on what type of velocity I should be able to get from this rifle ? Any help is appreciated.
Thank you
gdc

RL26 and RL17 will likely be two of your top performers with regard to velocity. H4831 is a great powder and has very good temp stability but lags behind the others when it comes to pure speed.

I have never ran 130s but I have done plenty of load development on a bunch of savages with 22"- 26" barrels depending on the model. H1000 and Retumbo are my go to powders. The accuracy node seems to be right around the 2950fps mark regardless of barrel length.

Thank you all for the responses, STOMP442 where would the next node be, any chance it would it be attainable with the right powder and a 22" barrel ?

gdc2, your OAL isn't particularly long at 2.95 and though they are both very good powders H1000 and Retumbo are bulky and take up a good amount of space so at your OAL if velocity is what you're after RL26 is going to be the speed king. I don't think you could get enough of either in the case to match it. Doesn't mean any of the others won't shoot well because a variety of the others certainly will but I don't think any of them will match the velocity of RL26 or RL17 if that is what you are after.

B23 was not sure if 22" of barrel is enough for a slow burner like R26 ? Do you have any experience with R23, I was originally leaning toward R17, but R23 falls in between R17 and R26 and is a temp stable powder with de-coppering properties...not sure if it has the same reputation for providing higher velocity than other brands in its burn rate but I believe its similar to 4831

Again, no experience with 130s, but there seems to be another node up around 3050 as well. Shoots great but is a little bit hard on brass. Not real sure if you can get there in a 22" barrel and 130s or not. I always opt for the 2950 node just because it shoots really well and anything that is shot with it will never know the difference of 100fps.

Thanks again, your right 2950 should be plenty. Thanks to all for the responses

I probably use more RL26 in a variety of different cartridges than all others combined so I'm not much help to you on RL23 also my 6.5-284 is on a LA Rem 700 with a long throat and wears a 26in tube.

Where do you find the RL 26 lol none available anywhere around here for months!.. my 6 creedmoor loves it!
To the op my 6.5-284 loves H-4831 but I wouldn’t hesitate trying Rl 26

tried H1000 in my winchester cases; 65-284; 4831 was more consistent and gave outstanding accuracy and groups at 2950fps using 142gr sierra
