Best pig rifle ?

Any opinions on what makes for a good pig gun? Cali is GTG on pig all year and there is no bag/possession and transport limit on pigs right now. Long story short I made the mistake a few weeks ago of using an 5.56 AR15 on a pig hunt. I was having no luck all day until heading back to the truck, anyhow a ninety pounder crossed right in front of us on the trail about a hundred yards up. I had to light the thing up before it died, probably shot it about ten times, worst kill ever.

So don't try to convince me that any 5.56 is gonna do the trick. "Or you didn't shoot it in the right place."

I was thinking 6.8 or even 308 gas gun now. Who is using a bolt gun for pigs? Advice appreciated.

My California pig recipe is a .308 or .30-06 & Barnes 130 Triple Shocks, tipped or not. No need to push them extremely hard, any typical load with good accuracy will work.
I’ve used this on many pigs, instant death on any reasonable hit.

The CA Central Valley pig hunts I have been on offer shots from 40 - 300 yds. and beyond. I use a bolt action '06 w/ Barnes 168 TSX bullets with excellent results. Have tried magnums and it simply was not worth the recoil. I use the same rifle/load for Tule elk to 400 yds. with excellent results as well. Personally I can not see the need for the extra weight of a gas gun unless you are on public land and not paying-by-pig but to each their own.
Good luck with your future hunts!

I have shot pigs with a .223, 260AI, .308, 7mm Rem Mag, 224 Valkyrie, 6.8 SPC, and 22 Nosler. I like the 22 cal rounds for them but we didn't have clean kills until we moved to the 64gr level of bullets. The 55gr just wouldn't do it quick enough but the heavier ones would. Good Luck!

FnFal 7.62X51,,308 cases,168gr Hornady A-MAX,,40gr benchmark,,got dead pigs in the back from last night,,buzzards found them for me,very hard to get into,,

Don't discount the AR 15 in 6.5 Grendel. More popular and many more companies making them than 6.8 and lots more verity and easier to get ammo. 308 or 6.5 Creedmoor are good in the much heaver weight AR 10 if you want gas guns. If you already have an AR 15 all you will need for the 6.5 Grendel is a upper and proper magazines. I will advise you to say away from the Bear Creek Arsenal uppers because they are a crap shoot as to if you get one that will shoot or not. Been there and done that and have the lumps to prove it.

Yeah I can totally see the 7.62x51 as good pig ammo. But I want the ability to reach out accurately as well and as good as the sig556 is I don't know how it's gonna do at 400 yards?

I was running 75gr TAP so I do not buy 223/556 as a reliable pig killer as stated, it's crap for first shot kills on a pig. If I had the money to burn I would possibly do a SCAR17 for pigs.

My son uses a 350 Remington one round between the lookers and it’s all done but the quiver part. May not be very accurate at the 400 mark but I don’t know either way.

I would love to see what Fredo's .220 REDLINE with a 60gr monolithic bullet does to a rack of spare ribs, but for me it's a .45 Raptor I'm building.

What have you used in the past and how did it work?

spot on

You don’t need a semi for pigs, bolt guns work fine. The pig that will withstand a well placed .308 from 400 yards has not been born yet.
when you got 30 to 35 pigs 25 yards from you bolt gun is just to slow,,its not for fun here, don't want them to tear my property up,,get sighted on one then spray and pray,,
