I’ve noticed touch + .007 works well and .040 off the lands seems to mimic it.
If I had to throw a load together without work up, I would pick touch + .007

That is like saying, "When you take your micrometer and measure the muzzle diameter, what is the last digit?"

This may just be coincidence, but it seems like every time I test, it's either jammed, 15-20 thous off, or way back (more than .060). I can't think of a rifle I've owned where .040 off worked.

Getting any consistent answer to this question is like asking my six kids what there favorite ice cream is today , as compared to last week .

I’d like it better if the poll included much smaller increments. I’d bet most of the guys around here are between 15 in and 15 off. I’ve had a couple that shot hybrids well at 30 off.

The way I read it, the op is just looking at an average for fun. So for instance out of 100 replys,
you might get an average of +.005 jam, which in theory would indicate most barrels do better
at this position. Although we all know, different strokes for different barrels.Would be interesting just to see what average you come up with. op, please correct me if I misinterpreted this.

You are correct Gamble, this is just for fun, and I was curious what a large sample of barrels liked as far as seating depth is concerned. I was hoping for a large input, so a good average could be extrapolated.

Depends of the rifle and bullet - one size doesn't fit all with my rifles.

My Rem's and Browning's have a lot of free bore thus creating a lot of jump but it doesn't seem to affect the ability to produce tight groups in the 1/2 moa range.

The one thing I never do is seat the bullet into the lands no matter how much free bore the rifle possesses. I don't want a "pet" load that will cause the bullet to stick in the lands when I extract it in the field. Also concerned about the extra pressure that might be created from jamming a bullet into the lands. I've never found this to be necessary to produce tight groups at least from a precision varmint hunting perspective.

In load development I start at a COL that will first fit the magazine, second have at least one bullet diameter in the neck of the case. If those criteria can be met then I start at .020" from the lands and work from there but never closer than about .010" from the lands to allow for variations in bullet ogive.

I currently have 18 very accurate, well tuned F class, Fly Shoot, PRS and 600/1000yd BR rifle barrels going at the moment and the preferred seating depth preferences are different for all. Even with my 2x 6 Dashers shooting the same bullet, one likes .010" jam and the other 15" jump. With my 3x 7 SAUMs all shooting the same 183 Sierra, they each like .010" jam, .005 jump and .015" jump. Just when I think I have one cartridge/bullet combo worked out, the next barrel wants something different.
