Best Method for Testing Different Bullets?

I had my heavy 6PPC rifle barrel re-contoured to a sporter weight & then rechambered to a 6BR (no-turn neck). The barrel is a 1:14 twist. It shoots great with bullets in the 65gr weight range. For me great is 100 yd 5-shots 1/2" or better. I'm liking this rifle so much I'm thinking about using it for bigger game (WT). I've got some 80 gr Norma FBSP & 87 gr Sierra HPBT & Speer 90 gr FBSP to test. It was thinking about loading a few of each bullet with H322. Using multiple sources, find the min to max spread for each bullet, take 10% of the spread & add to the minimum for test load. Probably load a set of 5 rounds for each bullet.

Your thoughts & comments are appreciated!

Thanks for the good references. I've read some of these before & I know heavier bullets are not ideal in 14" twist. I had some experience with .224 65,69,70,77gr bullets in my 1:14" .22-250. All shot stable except the 77gr that hit the target sideways. The .224 70 gr Speer FBRN has very good accuracy in my .22-250 rifle.

It probably was the extra velocity in the 22 250 that let you shoot even 69s in a 14 twist barrel. My 9 twist 26" 223R will stabilize 77MKs but it isn't supposed to be able to. I think it is the long tube with high velocity that gets it done with mine.

I can tell you from experience that 1-14 will not stabilize a 80 grn bullet. I trued some 80 grain Batrs BT’s in my 13 1/2 PPC at around 3250 fps and the bullet holes were borderline keyholes.

Also, 322 and 133 are too fast for that combo. 4895 is perfect.

A 12 twist will work with your bullet selections. My 6BRA throated to .100 shoots 80 grain bullets great out of a 1-12.
