Best med/long-range 7mm-08 accuracy loads?

After considerable time deliberating, posting multiple questions here etc I've finally decided on a round for the next build.

7mm-08 in a 30" 1:9 bull contour with .119 freebore.

Looking to shoot the 162-139gr bullets. Most shooting will be at 600 yards with 1k when I can.

It looks like RL17, IMR4064, H4350 and Varget are the front runners powder wise, with primers being as subjective as ever.

Single shot action so mag length isn't an issue.

Obviously need to do my own work-ups, chrono testing etc- but if anyone has a suggestion re where to start I'm all ears.

Have you consider Ackley Improved, better case life.

That's a good suggestion. I did look at it but it didn't offer enough gains to warrant the time, effort etc for me.

Chamber specs on this one will be as described above.

As far as I can tell at the moment it looks like max loads with a 160gr bullet will be:

R17- 47gr
IMR4350- 46gr
H4831-48.5gr

not to say that these will be the most accurate, or where I'll start, just that these are the do not exceed max charges for said combos.

Sounds like your on the right track. I've since sold my 7mm08 & now built a 284 Shehane but still to this day is astounded that the little 7mm08 can perform way out there with some time spent on the reloading bench. Try the 140gr VLD, 168gr VLD or 162gr Amax & H4350 (ADI2209) or R17 with Lapua brass & yourl find something that will work well out far. You should be able to get single digit ES spreads & sub 1/2moa load resonably easy.

Thanks for the reply. Have a 30" barrel on its way. Hope to be able to shoot the 162 A-Maxs at 2850-2900.
