Best Bore Sighting Tool?

Ledd Slinger

I don't use bore sighting tools for dialing in new scopes because I've always had excellent results just looking down the bore, centering it on target at 100 yards and dialing the scope reticle to match. Gets me pretty close every time.

However, I have a rifle that is currently sighted in dead on at 300 yards, but the scope rings need to be lapped. (Should have done it in the first place but was in a time crunch)

I am wondering what is a good reliable bore sighting tool that I can set up to get a reference on my reticle position then leave in place as I remove my scope then lap and bed the scope rings? Once scope is remounted, I will dial the reticle to the same reference point. Am hoping to get it close enough where I can go right out to 300 yards once the work is complete. Will save time by not having to mess around at 100 yards.

Cant use a chamber laser bore sighter because nobody makes one in a 6.5 Rem Mag chambering as far as I know.

Thanks for any advice and input

PS: scope rings need to be lapped and bedded because I am using more windage adjustment than I should be and also plan to mount a new 20 MOA base.

The Bushnell works good for me. I then just go to the 100yd and aim at the X and shoot...The aim at the X and move the crosshair to the hole in the paper.....That should pretty much do it... ;)

I would never put an expanding arbor in one of my barrels. There are other styles, the least dangerous of which is the Leupold that uses magnetism rather than inserting anything into the bore.

If I were in your situation, I would set up a target at 100 yards, and shoot a group holding center, to establish how far off your 300 yard zero is from the center of your 100 yard aiming point. Then I would lap the rings, reinstall the scope, bore site the rifle, and adjust the turrets so that, with the same ammo, the center of a group is in the same place as the first one.

Thinkin’ Leupold discontinued their magnetic stick onto the muzzle sighting tool, it disappeared from their website over a year ago. Folk might find one used or stashed back in new old stock somewheres.

Hang a target at 10yds. With the gun stable, look through the bore and center the bore on the target. Have a helper put a pencil dot where the cross hairs are. After the scope rings are lapped line the bore with the target and move the crosshairs to the pencil dot. You might have to enlarge the pencil dot to see it. Use good light.
On another note, for bore sighting, if you use a ballastic table you can use the 10yd bullet rise or trajectory calculation and it will take scope mounting height and bullet drop into consideration. I believe Winchesters calculator had 10yd increments. Works great.

I just changed scopes on one of my rifles and have the leupold magnetic bore sighting tool. Before removing the scope I noted where on the grid I was with the tool and then put the new scope on. I dialed the new scope in to the same spot on the grid and was only two clicks off on windage at 100 yards.

Ledd Slinger here is the DEAL of the day, I have a Leupold bore sighter that never gets used send me a PM with mailing info and you can have it.
Maybe someday pay it forward.

The one and only. The Sweany Site-A Line bore sighter. The sportsman's model with the diagonal crosshairs. Sold by the Alley Supply Company. The only drawback is that it requires a different spud for each caliber. A small price to pay for the excellent results.
This will definietly work if you have to rezero at a 100 or 200 yards.

I respectfully rescind my offer.
Had I looked at the original date of the post I would have seen it was almost 3 years old. Boy I hate revived post.
But truthfully if someone needs it let me know.

+2 on the Leupold Zero Point. Magnetic, no bore spud. Can run on battery or straight light source. The grid inside is squared up to the device so well that you could level the device on the muzzle and set your scope's vertical hair to the grid for plumb.
