Best all around 6mm cartridge

skeetlee

Lee Gardner Precision
I am looking into building a 243Ai out of one of my rem 700vs 22-250 rifles. I like the ballistics of the 243AI but i thought i better check around to see if i am missing something else. I do not really want a standard 243 win. I want something different than the rest of my shooting buddies. I will be using this rifle to gain experience shooting 500+ yards and for coyote sniping in the winter. So i need something that really handles the wind and shoots as flat as possible. A 6br would be cool or even a 6xc. Any ideas from you fellas? Thanks Lee

If you're a speed freak...go for the 243AI....the 6BR or 6XC are what I would suggest for accuracy...long barrel life...good/easy dies...excellent brass for either..I have a 12 twist 6BR and an 8 twist 6XC...yes Lapua still builds 243 brass...

Check Richards Rifles, think last name is Franklin. He is high on the 6mmRemAI. He also talks about good barrel life compared to the 243, longer neck? JimDee

Check out the 6CM.It's fast,great barrel life,highly accurate out to 1 thousand.At 600 yards it's excellent.

6MMAI, I had Richard Franklin build mine and it will flat out shoot!!! Check him out at richardscustomrifles.com he also has his 6AI on this site for one of the guns of the month.

It's hard to beat a 6br overall..
For coyotes ~500yds, 95VLDs from a 6br is plenty. There is every die in the world, many chamber reamers/options, excellent Lapua brass, quite a few powders and bullets working. It has low recoil, great barrel life, and a 24-26" barrel is enough.
It's very easy to be content with.

I never met anyone who didn't like their 6br

If this is your first custom do the 6BR. Maybe a 6x47 Lapua. For your purposes, you don;t want to get into an Imp'd case.

It doesn't matter how fast the bullet gets there if you can't hit your target.

The 6BR will also let you become more proficient since it is cheaper overall to shoot.

YMMV,
JB

I just shot my 6x47 lapua for the first time today and it's awsome. Mine is 1-10 twist and i was shooting less than 1/2 inch at 100 with 70 gr. bthp. I splaterd a few rocks at 200 with the last few shots. Not too shabby for the first 20 rounds fired. It was pretty windy too, but i just wanted to break in the barrel.

I will vote for the 6x47 L, shot mine for the first time Sunday and I must say I am very impressed. These were loads I put together just to measure some velocity and check for pressure. 16 out of the 25 groups shot were under .5" and the best .182". many were .2xx and .3xx. worst was.770"

I was concerned I would be sacrificing velocity but what I am giving up over the 6AI I sold because I didn't like fire forming brass, is not worth mentioning.
70 gr bullets 3600
87 gr at 3450
90 gr at 3300 with no signs of pressure!
I love this cartridge and it's my first time at the range with it!!

243Mendoza: a 243W with a 6BR neck and shoulder. With the 115gr DTAC at 3100fps, with limited testing,it seems to shoot flatter and as accurate as the 6.5-284W at 2950pfs.
