Best .270 loads

Two entirely different disciplines- target shooting &/or punching vent holes thru deer/hogs.

There are few options to choose from for the .277" bore in match bullets.
Any projectile will punch vent holes thru deer/hogs.

Purchase a couple reloading manuals for data & proceed to your hearts content!!

I can tell you that a .270 Win. using either 130 or 140grain HUNTING bullets, will eat up H4831 like candy... I used to use the OLD H4831 (surplus military powder) which is slower that the new stuff.... But I used to use 61.0grs with a 130gr Sierra GameKing bullet... Absolute lethality on deer... BUT as I stated, that was the OLD powder.... Get a good load manual, follow it and use H4831.... I also used to use CCI 250's with that load... I remember getting 3060f.p.s.and awesome accuracy...

H4831sc is my powder of choice for the .270 Win rifles I've either owned or currently own. I use 130 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips and the hottest recommend powder charge from Nosler is my most accurate load. Explosive on deer.

Too much recoil for target shooting though, at least for me.

Yes, a healthy load of H4831SC and 140 NBT are my go to for game. Try 130,140, and 150 gr.bullets, every barrel is a little different.

60 grs H4831 or the SC version with a 130 Sierra or Nosler ballistic tip is what I use in a 270 win for deer. Super accurate and kills like you dropped a house on a deer. Bang Flop.

favorite has been the 140's Sierra and imr or h 4350 at about 2950fps out of 24" bbl

They shoot very accurately and deer drop., for elk the same powders and the 150 Nosler partition.

My 270 loads are 59grs H4831SC x 130 gr BT x CCI200 or 58 grs H4831SC x 140 gr Accubond x CCI200 OR 59grs RL-17 x 110 gr Barnes TTSX x CCI 200.

130gr load runs about 3050-3070
140 gr load runs 3000
110 gr load runs 3550

All are good the 110 gr load is by far the most deadly. Most accurate (all are) if it came down to bullseye shooting normally is the 140gr.

Many of the old loads for H4831 top loads a 130 gr at 60 grs of powder. You might be able to get away with it depending upon the bullet that you're using. Some bullets will make that load over pressure and also hot summer weather. That's why I dropped back to 59grs with good accuracy and still good velocity.

I no longer shoot a 270 but my wife's Rem. 270 loves 55 gr. imr 4350 with nosler 130 gr BT. It has accounted for the demise of many antelope, most recent one being taken at 419 yards. No, I never expect to get this rifle back.

For targets/varmints, my favorite load was a 100 gr Speer HP over 48.5 gr of IMR4895. Shot around .25 MOA and made crows disappear. Also killed a deer with that load once when I was in a pinch.

Some good advice here. IMR or H4350, IMR or H4831 have worked best for me with 130 to 140 Gr bullets. While you cannot do a direct substitute, I got my very best accuracy with Magnum primers--CCI 250 and F215. I didn't have much luck with the Sierra 135MK, but you should try it for targets. Never tried Bergers but they should also be tried for accuracy. Have fun with it.

What would you gentlemen recommend for African plains game? The ones we are hunting can run up to around 600 lbs. Ranges are out to 400 yds. A friend of mine is taking his .270 Savage 111 and is shooting 130s. I am helping him with loads but don't have any experience hunting with this caliber. I would think the 140s & heavier would be better. Any suggestions? Thanks, Hog

I have never hunted in Africa... However, I understand from reading that some of the game has thicker hides than our North American game.. If I were going over there and using a .270, I would be using a Tipped Triple Shock (150 class weight) or at the very least, a good bonded core bullet with a good reputation for penetration... Remember no animal on this planet can live long with his lungs tore up.... Get the bullet inside and in the right place and it's over.. However, having said that, I am one to like complete "thru and thru" penetration so you get a blood trail and can find the animal..

Original Barnes X 130 gr seated Waaaaay off the lands at 150 fps slower than your normal , with temp stable powder for thick skinned game.
