BERSIN tool Opinions?

My friend has a Bersin "adjuster" and he thinks it is great because if you put a dial indicator on the shank of the bullet it is straight. I have looked at some of his "adjusted" loads and I think it is a joke. When the ram pushes against the bullet, the neck is unsupported. The straightening is accomplished by moving the bullet inside the neck and making the neck oval. I guess, if having the bullet inline with the case is that important, the misshaping of the neck won't matter. Doesn't make sense to me.

Reed--supposedly there is now a mod that allows you to bend the neck to straighten the round instead of pushing on the bullet.

I have seen and used the Bersin Tool it was available at the Winds of Manitee match in Florida a few years back...

I didn't like it. I won't buy it.

First off if you are making rounds that aren't straight, find out why and fix that.

Secondly if your rounds are not straight and they can be adjusted by hand what makes you think they won't spring back???

Thirdly is there anyway to see that the tight, straight chamber that you are shoving these rounds into won't straighten them???

I can go on... Forth, Clarence Hammonds used this tool all week in practice and Satuday in the match... He did very miserable in the match Saturday and didn't even shoot Sunday.

Do you want me to go on... Ok I will, When you bend this bullet straight in the neck does the neck tension from round to round change? if so does it get to the point where a tight neck with a slip fit is now a very tight fit on one side and therefore not straight in the bore?

Am I digging for more or have I said enough? I will stop there, you get the point?

By the way.. the representitive that had these tools at the match was about the most pushy used car/shoe salesman you have ever seen. I won't mention his name...A good product will sell itself a gimmick needs to be sold.

When I use mine I'm only working with about .001 to .002 off perfect at the most, so I don't imagine I'm bending the necks, or oblonging them either.
If it does it don't show up on a gauge anyway.
I do see a improvement in shooting over cases that have not been done.
I'm all for anything that may help even a tiny bit.......sides that, I like gadgets.

Those guys were at the Super Shoot a couple of years ago. I have not seen one point blank person using it. If it were revolutionary, all of the point blank boys would be using them.

That does not necessarily say that it won't work, it says that the PPC boys know how to make ammo.

It was also very expensive.

Money spent on a good die would be a better choice.

In my humble opinion, using this tool is like putting the gate up after the horse has run away. Find out why your bullets are not straight and correct the problem at the source, don't try to correct bullet runout by pushing on one side of the bullet. My thoughts are that the neck is going to elongate or take on an oval shape as the result of pushing on one side. Use the right dies or do what you have to do to get your rounds straight from the beginning.

I'm with Preacher, If ya going to check for runout,... ooh it's out .003" ...ya may as well make them perfect.

A friend has one, and tells me that it is not all that easy to use, and I believe that they are caliber specific. I have an H&H and it is easy to use, and covers a broad range of calibers. If you want to straighten, the H&H is the way to go.

Several years ago, I bought a Bersin tool, and after using it for several months, saw no difference in accuracy and sold it.

In his book, "Rifle Accuracy" on page 258, Tony Boyer states he and a friend were walking thru vendors tents at the Super Shoot and came upon a guy selling this tool. The gent checked some of their loaded rounds and found concentricity ranged from .001 to .005" off. The vendor opined they probably would not shoot and offered to straighten them. Boyer declined and proceeded to shoot several groups in the low teens. He decided he did not need that tool.

There are many gimmicks out there claiming to be what everyone needs. I am no longer a sucker for most of them.
