Berrys 223 55 gr and H335, loaded some, are these safe...

New to reloading, got a buddy helping me at times. Bought some berrys 223 55 gr plated bullets and have H335 to use. My buddy helped me set up the Dillon 550 to load a test group each of 23 gr, 23.5 gr, and 24 gr. I have not shot them yet, namely due to it being so windy lately. My intention was to see what batch grouped best, them crank out the remainder of the 500 box of Berrys. But reading online just now, I am curious if these are loaded too hot. What do you guys think? Thought it best to ask here before shooting. Plan to shoot them tomm if wind ain't too bad. Or buy a bullet puller. Ha ha.

I would call berrys tomorrow to confirm that they are safe.Aplated bullet can be used in very mild to mediuim loads and I am not so sure that you can load them as hot as a jacketed bullet.I would definately not shoot until you can confirm they are indeed safe. You only get one set of eyes and hands so be on the ultra safe side.I would buy midsouths varmint bullets for 50.00 or alittle higher and they are safe for normal pressure's.

I just received 6000 hornady 55 gr from Midsouth. I had bought 500 berrys plated at a gun show and that is what I loaded first. Just wondering if the powder charge sounds about right. Found some contradicting info online earlier tonight.

I don't know if Berry's actually made plated 223 bullets. I just double checked mine from Berry's and they are jacketed bullets. While most of Berry's bullets are plated, not all of them are plated. I would confirm if you actually have plated bullets. I haven't used H335 myself but from what I can gather its on the "hotter" end of the scale. My opinion only, but I think you can shoot them. Start at the lightest load. Like always, check the brass for any signs of excessive pressure - case neck, primer, etc.

Your loads are fine and well below max - enjoy them.

The link below from Georgia Arms has info and image of the bullets I bought at the gun show. I swear the guy told me they were Berrys, but I am not sure at this point.

Dan, I see you're new to reloading so, buying anything out of a zip lock bag is never a good idea. If it's not a sealed box or container, don't touch it. I need to know where my stuff comes from, no matter what.

Just my 2 cents

Ditto to what r bose said. Buying anything like bullets or primers, in anything other than the sealed factory box is a crap shoot at best. Would you also buy powder in a container that had the factory seal broken?

This is the way some dishonest people get rid of their junk, and make some money selling something that would otherwise be worthless.

I personally knew an individual who would start out with new factory brass, reload it until he began to get case neck splits and signs of case head seperation, throw that away, but then clean and polish the remaining brass and sell it as "once fired". The "once fired brass" was also sold in zip lock sandwich bags.

Just one of the reasons I do not do gun shows.

Dan - I looked at the link you have provided. I'm quite certain those are jacketed bullets. You can see the exposed lead on the base of some of those pictured. I've never seen "plated" rifle bullets. I have reloaded plated pistol bullets - they will have a uniform plating over 100% of the projectile. A jacketed bullet will either have lead exposed at the base or tip, but not both.

Also, I'm guessing that you're reloading for an AR-15? If so, here's a link that might be helpful http://accurateshooter.net/Downloads/sierra223ar.pdf .

Good luck, don't take shortcuts, and slowly work your way up to an accurate load.
