Berger's 270cal 170gr EOL Elite Hunter Bullet

Anyone shooting this bullet?
What twist does one need in order to get it to shoot?
Anyone got any load data/ballistics for it in a 24" 270 barrel?
Would order the Berger manual but it just galls the sh*t out of me to pay $15 for shipping on a $29 book.
Thanks.

Looked good to me too at first glance. High BC and good weight for caliber. Think it requires an 8 -8.5 twist. At .660 BC should be a slippery devil. The berger manual is sold at Midway usa for 24.99 and around 10.00 shipping. Not as bad. Still crazy shipping but best price I've seen.

bigngreen - how much throat do you need to get them out of the case a reasonable distance?
Did order the Berger reloading manual thru Amazon for $38, total.

I'm running a .180 throat in the WSM and it puts it in good position in the case, COAL is running 3.120. I have not ran them or build a straight 270.

Thanks. Have you run them across a chrony yet?
Am still cogitating on a .270 (std or WSM) vs. a .280 (std, AI or WSM) I'm figuring that a 270WSM should just about equal a 30-06 in the recoil department, so I'm OK with that for a hunting rifle where I'm not being hammered with a 3x22shot strings like F-Class. Am thinking the 280AI would be about the same and have a wider selection of bullets to shoot (140-162 for deer, etc., and 168 or larger for elk)

While the 10" twist most likely won't shoot the 170gr bullet, I did just pick up a NIB Model 70 Featherweight that came from the factory with the 24" and slightly heavier profile barrel from the Sporter model. Guess those elk, deer & antelope will just have to be satisfied with the 130-150gr bullets I'll be shooting at them. ;-)

The Berger Manual (which is a great read in addition to being a great resource, btw) is several years old and has no load data for some of the new, heavy-for-caliber bullets, like the one you are asking about.

I think if you e-mail their tech support people they will give you some load info and tech data back though.

Yes............. wish all the load manual folks would make them loose-leaf, like Sierra. And then allow us to purchase new data pages when new rounds come out (which Sierra does not do). I'm missing 6.5 CM, 6mm Dasher, etc. An imperfect world. Berger manual gets here tomorrow. Looking forward to reading.

AR Shooter,
What .270 cartridge is your Winchester chambered for and what is the ALTITUDE(s) you will be hunting at please? We can help you with the load data.

Hi Phil - is the standard .270 Win in a Model 70 with a 24" barrel and a 10" twist. Will be hunting in NW CO at 4000' or above. Feel sure that I'll have to stay with either a 140gr or 150gr bullet with this particular cartridge/barrel combination. Will be a fair bit of load testing over the next several months to see what the rifle likes. Thanks.
