Berger Match Bullets for critters ?

Gentlemen :) I have used Berger bullets before for target but I've never used them for varmints. I'm looking at trying the .224 bullets 60 62 or 64 grain in a 22-250 1-12 twist. My question is if anybody has experence with them on Varmints. What is the Splat factor ? Do they explode well on small critters ?

If your talking about the Berger VLD type bullets, you will not get the splat factor your looking for. I used to use he VLD type bullets for varminting, but I lost to many varmints due to no expansion, and there was no splat factor.

Unless I am shooting past 800 yards, I will use V-Max, Ballistic Tip or Blitzking type bullets on varmints. IMO, I would rather turn my windage knob than lose a varmint and splat factor for a better BC non expanding type bullet.

The VLD type bullets will kill, don't get me wrong. However, they do not kill like the poly tipped bullets.

I agree with you Varminthunter on the VLD's but the 3 bullets I mentioned above are not VLD's. They're flat base match bullets. I think the're supposed to have varmint bullet qualities but I'd sure like to hear from one who has used these particular bullets on critters.
I guess I want what we all do, a target bullet that turns varmint when I see a crow.

I don't like the Berger bullets much for varminting as you'll get ricochets. Solid hits will generally get you a decent kill, but they aren't as destructive as V-Maxes. Misses will often result in a ricochet depending on the backstop. I can't say I've ever had a V-Max ricochet.

I have shot 60 and 65g,discontinued) 22 caliber bullets in a 22/250 AI and many 52's on ground squirrels and p. dogs.

The berger bullet uses a J-4 Jacket that is tapered toward the tip. The bullet jacket is very, very thin at the tip.

These bullets very close to the Nosler Ballistic Tip in my opinion.

Of course, speed and RPM's is everything in getting the bullets to blow up on critters.

I made my own 6mm bullets for many years. I used the J-4 jackets and you can bet that they are as explosive as the 70g nosler BT!

the 52 grain berger & sierra flat base expands pretty well...I've tested it in wet sand VS other 22 bullets @ 200 yds...The 55 gr V-Max is just nasty during comparison...When you Step up to the 6mm 80 gr berger HP that # knocks the biggest groundhogs flat...& it really shoots nicely..mike in ct

If i were u i'd take a look at the JLK Low Drags in 22 cal. They have the highest rated BC's for their particular twist rates and have been unusually accurate in several rifles/handguns i've tried them in. Here's the specs on them--

52 gr/14 twist/BC=.302
60/12/.339
65/10/.397
